What rules build a Honkai: Star Rail team?

This page gathers the strongest teams of the current version into one LIVE board, but before you pick one, learn the theory behind it: a Honkai: Star Rail team always fits one archetype (Crit, Follow-Up Attack, Damage-over-Time, or Super Break), survives on Skill Point (SP) balance, and wins on the right action order rather than the right character names. Learn these four pieces — archetype, SP, rotation, spending tier — and you can read any team on the board, even one built around a character too new for any written guide.

How to play →

Her strongest team needs 3 dedicated Elation teammates: Yao Guang (speeds up Punchline/MMR generation), Sparxie (boosts team offense), and Huohuo (healing plus team action advance — currently her best sustain partner).

Without Huohuo, you can swap in Sparkle (action advance, keeps Skill Point flow) or Aventurine (shield sustain, usable but not as optimal as the dedicated Elation lineup).

Note her teams are fairly locked-in and don't overlap well with other elements' DPS teams, so you need to invest in a separate support roster.

The 4 core archetypes — spot the playstyle before you build

Every team on the board falls into one of four core playstyles. Recognizing the archetype tells you where it is strong and what pieces it needs:

  • Crit: stacks Crit Rate and Crit Damage, feeding off teammates' damage buffs and RES shred to multiply one huge hit. The most common and easiest archetype to understand and build.
  • Follow-Up Attack (FUA): the carry deals most of its damage through automatic extra attacks outside its own turn, triggered when allies attack or use skills. These teams run a fast rhythm and depend less on the carry's own turn.
  • Damage-over-Time (DoT): applies stacking effects (Burn, Shock, Bleed, Wind Shear) that tick every turn on their own, so damage bypasses some enemies' dodge or direct damage reduction.
  • Super Break: skips the Crit formula entirely, stacking Break Effect so a Weakness Break becomes its own independent burst of damage matching the breaker's element — a build path that lives outside the usual Crit stat priority.

Knowing which archetype your team runs tells you exactly which stats to chase on Relics and Light Cones instead of building on a hunch.

SP economy — why a team that runs dry stalls out

Each turn a character either Basic Attacks (free, usually refunds SP to the team) or uses a Skill (costs 1 SP, hits harder than a Basic). Ultimates cost no SP but require charging energy. The whole team shares one SP pool — run it dry mid-fight and you're stuck spamming Basics, losing your damage rhythm entirely:

  • SP generators: some support or sustain characters have Skills that cost NO SP, or even refund SP to the team — this is the piece that keeps a team from ever running dry.
  • SP spenders: the main DPS usually needs to Skill constantly to maximize damage, burning SP fastest of anyone on the team.
  • The balance rule: a healthy team needs at least one SP generator alongside one or two spenders — four characters all spending SP is a guaranteed way to run dry in a long fight.

When reading a team on the board, check whether it has an SP generator — if not, that team needs you to pace in Basic Attacks manually.

Rotation principles — the shared action order behind every team

A rotation is the repeating action order each cycle that stacks damage at the right moment. There's no fixed rotation for every team, but a few principles hold true almost universally:

  • Buffs and debuffs go first: a support's damage buff or RES shred should land before the carry's turn, so the carry catches the full effect on its very first hit.
  • Sustain times the dangerous turn: shields or heals should go out right before an enemy's big AoE attack, not the instant you enter combat — wasting the effect's duration means losing a layer of protection.
  • Advance actions push your tempo forward: some skills let a character act earlier than its normal turn — use them to squeeze in an extra buff or combo right before the carry goes.
  • Ultimates wait for the right window: having enough energy doesn't mean using it instantly — many Ultimates hit hardest when timed against a broken enemy or right before the carry's turn.

Read each team's rotation note on the board with this mindset, and you'll understand WHY it works, not just copy it blindly.

3 spending tiers — reading a team against your wallet

Not everyone spends the same, so almost every strong team has three versions, differing in how many limited units and signature Light Cones they use:

  • Whale tier: limited carry plus its signature Light Cone and deep Eidolons — the highest damage ceiling, built for the hardest content of the version.
  • Low-spender tier: keeps the main limited carry but swaps the supporting roles for 4-star characters or standard Light Cones — keeps most of the power at a much lower cost.
  • F2P tier: the whole team built from free characters, standard-banner 4-stars, and the Trailblazer — slower, but still enough to clear most everyday content.

The board flags which teams sit in the F2P tier; for the low-spender tier, read each member's swap suggestion to downgrade a whale team to your own budget.

Using the board and filters — find the right team in seconds

You're not meant to read every team — filter for what you actually need:

  • Filter by role (DPS / Support / Sustain) when you're missing a specific slot in your roster.
  • Filter by element (Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum, Imaginary, Physical) when you're raising a carry of that element.
  • Filter by mode (Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, Apocalyptic Shadow) since a team strong in one mode isn't always optimal in another — each mode rewards a different playstyle.
  • Filter to F2P to see only free-tier teams, skipping any suggestion that needs a limited character.

Every member links to its full build page; the swap note tells you which cheaper character covers the same role. The TOP 5 block at the top of the page is a shortcut for anyone who just wants to know what's strongest right now, no filtering needed.

Where to start — the short advice

If you're stuck, follow this order:

  • New / few characters: prioritize a top support or sustain over a second DPS — a good support lifts every team you build later.
  • You already have a carry you love: filter by that carry's element, then pick the archetype that matches your playstyle (Crit is the easiest to learn, Super Break the most durable).
  • Low spender: read the swap notes and filter to F2P tier — everyday content never demands a whale team.
  • Every new version: check the board before spending, since the strongest teams shift with balance changes and new characters.

Bottom line: know your archetype, mind your SP, order your rotation, pick the spending tier that fits your wallet — let the board handle the rest.

FAQ

How many characters are in a Honkai: Star Rail team?

Four, usually built as one main DPS plus two supports, or one support and one sustain, depending on the archetype. There's no fixed ratio for every team — a Super Break team may run two breakers instead of a single carry.

What can I run without any limited units?

Almost every strong team has an F2P version, built from free characters, standard 4-stars, and the Trailblazer. Filter the board to the F2P tag, or read each member's swap note to downgrade a whale team to a cheaper one.

What happens if I run out of Skill Points (SP) mid-fight?

You're forced into Basic Attacks to refund SP, losing your damage rhythm for a bit. Avoid it by pairing at least one character whose Skill costs no SP or refunds SP to the team, instead of stacking four SP-hungry roles at once.

Why learn archetypes instead of memorizing individual teams?

Because new characters release constantly, but there are 4 most common core playstyles (Crit, Follow-Up Attack, DoT, Super Break). Understanding archetypes lets you guess a new character's role in a team on your own, instead of waiting for a written guide to tell you who to pair it with.

How often is the team board updated?

The board is live data, updated every version or the moment the meta shifts significantly, with the version label right at the top. Each member's build data links automatically, so suggested teams always match the current version.

Why isn't there one single "best team"?

Because the best team depends on the carry you're raising, the mode you're clearing (Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, or Apocalyptic Shadow), and your spending tier. The board offers many teams so you can pick the one that fits your roster — and it matters more to learn the four theory pieces so you can optimize on your own.
