HSR Standard 5-Star Selector: Who to Pick at the 300-Pull Milestone (and the Closed Express Gift Event)

Updated: 02/07/2026
30-second summary

30-second summary: The 300-pull milestone on the standard banner (Stellar Warp) lets you hand-pick one of the 7 permanent 5-stars (Bronya, Himeko, Welt, Clara, Gepard, Bailu, Yanqing) — a permanent feature that's always there. Pick by the role your team lacks; if unsure, Bronya (action advance) fits almost any team. The Express Gift, by contrast, was a LIMITED-TIME event that has ended (it ran from Version 2.7 through the end of Version 3.2), so new players no longer receive it. Duplicates of permanent characters turn into Undying Starlight, spent at the Starlight Exchange (Store tab in the phone menu) on 4-star characters or 5-star Light Cones. Remember: only warps on the standard banner count toward the 300.

Where the selector comes from: one permanent feature, one closed event

HSR gives you two sources to hand-pick a free 5-star. The permanent, always-available one is the 300-warp milestone on the standard banner, called Stellar Warp in-game ('warp' is the community word for a single gacha pull). After your 300th pull on that exact banner, the game opens a one-off selector. The second source is the Express Gift — but this was a LIMITED-TIME event that has ended; it ran from Version 2.7 through the end of Version 3.2, so new players no longer receive it (see its own section below). Both draw from the same bag: the 7 permanent 5-stars, a fixed roster that never changes with patches — Bronya, Himeko, Welt, Clara, Gepard, Bailu, and Yanqing. Think of the selector like a gift voucher: you pick exactly one item off a shelf of seven. Before you commit, open GameVika's character pages (/hsr/characters) to read each kit, their traces, and suggested Light Cones.

Express GiftLimited event, now CLOSED (2.7–3.2)

The Express Gift is closed: when it ran, and can you still get it?

Let's be blunt to avoid confusion: the Express Gift is NOT an always-on login reward. It was a limited-time event, open only within a set window, then closed. That window ran from Version 2.7 through the end of Version 3.2. So if you started playing after Version 3.2 wrapped up, you will NOT see this event in-game and cannot claim a selector from it — even though many older videos and guides still describe it as if it's live. Don't waste time hunting in your Travel Log; if it's closed, there's no button left to press. The good news: it was never the only source of a selector. The 300-pull standard-banner milestone covered above and below is a permanent feature anyone can reach with enough warps. So if you're new and have no Express Gift, focus on the 300-pull route — that's the one always within reach. To gauge how far you are from 300, use GameVika's Pity Counter (/hsr/pity).

The seven faces: pick by ROLE, not by 'who's strongest'

This is where new players trip. The seven permanent characters have been around a long time, so don't ask 'who's strongest now', ask 'what role is my team missing'. Within this pool, Bronya gets named most for a simple mechanical reason: her skill makes an ally act immediately, granting an extra turn, which fits almost any team, so newcomers often grab her first. Himeko shines at hitting many enemies at once, ideal for Pure Fiction. Welt slows and controls enemies, Gepard and Bailu handle shields and healing, Clara counterattacks, Yanqing does single-target damage. None are useless, they simply suit different teams. Don't blindly follow 'pick this one'. Open GameVika's Tier List (/hsr/tier-list) to see each one's role and match it against the team you already run.

A safe order for beginners, and the Undying Starlight angle

If you're brand new and own none of the seven: a safe path the community repeats is Bronya first (for the turn-advance reason above), then Himeko. Once your roles are covered, think about duplicates — but get the mechanic right. Each selector gives exactly ONE copy, so you CANNOT hand-crank anyone straight to E6 with selectors alone; the other 6 copies of a character must arrive randomly from standard-banner pulls, and you don't control who drops. What you do control: once you own all 7, use the selector to add a copy of the character whose Eidolons you're building. About Undying Starlight: whenever you get a duplicate of a character you already own, you receive some Starlight along with an Eidolon; once that character reaches E6 (all 6 Eidolons), every later duplicate converts fully into Starlight. Where do you spend it? At the Starlight Exchange, opened from the Store tab in the phone menu (NOT Herta's Store, which belongs to Simulated Universe and uses a different currency). There you can buy 4-star characters (two on rotation) and 5-star Light Cones; note it does NOT sell permanent 5-star characters. In short, the selector is never wasted: missing a role, take that role; already complete, add a copy for Eidolons and Starlight.

How the 300 milestone works: only standard-banner warps count

This is the easiest thing to misread. The 300 milestone only counts warps you make ON the standard banner (Stellar Warp). Pulls on the beginner Departure Warp, on limited character banners, or on Light Cone banners do NOT add to this 300. It also happens only once per account, so be sure when you click. On the safety ceiling (pity — the most pulls it can take to guarantee a drop): this number DIFFERS by banner. Character banners (including the standard banner) guarantee a 5-star by pull 90 at the latest; but the Light Cone banner has a lower ceiling, guaranteeing one by pull 80. Don't generalize '90 for every banner' — the Light Cone banner is 80. Separately, every 10 pulls guarantees at least one 4-star on any banner. Because the standard banner is slow, don't burn all your Passes just to reach 300 faster. To see how close you are to a 5-star and to the milestone, use GameVika's Pity Counter (/hsr/pity).

Don't rush, don't waste: common beginner mistakes

Three short tips so you won't regret it. One, don't pick by looks or by a video's 'you must take this one'. Look at what your team lacks: no healer means Bailu or Gepard from the selector, no AoE means Himeko. Two, don't grind to 300 standard warps by buying Passes — this is a slow-burn reward banner, not a place to spend resources in a hurry; just pull gradually with Passes you earn naturally. Three, if you already own all seven, don't let the selector go to waste — add a copy for the character whose Eidolons you're building, and every duplicate feeds Undying Starlight as covered above. And once more: if you're new, don't count on the Express Gift — that event has closed. Bottom line: the selector is a guaranteed gift that never loses value, as long as you pick for your team's real need rather than a whim or a passing meta rumor.

FAQ

As a brand-new player with none of them, who should I pick first from the selector?

First, a note: if you started recently, you may only have the 300-pull standard-banner milestone, since the Express Gift event has ended. As for who: the most repeated safe pick is Bronya first, because her skill makes an ally act immediately and fits almost any team. If you happen to already have Bronya, take Himeko for Pure Fiction. Still, the truest answer is to pick the role your team is missing.

Does the 300 milestone count pulls from limited banners too?

No. Only warps made on the standard banner (Stellar Warp) count toward the 300. Pulls on the beginner banner, limited character banners, or Light Cone banners do not count. This milestone is also one-time per account.

I already own all 7 standard characters, what should I pick so it's not wasted?

Use the selector to add a copy of the character whose Eidolons you're building. Note you only get one copy at a time and can't hand-crank straight to E6 with the box; the rest arrive randomly from standard-banner pulls. Every duplicate of a character you already own yields Undying Starlight (at E6, the whole duplicate converts to Starlight). You spend Starlight at the Starlight Exchange — opened from the Store tab in the phone menu, NOT Herta's Store — on 4-star characters or 5-star Light Cones (it does not sell permanent 5-stars).

Should I buy Passes to grind to 300 pulls faster?

No. The standard banner is a long-term reward, slow to pull, and not a place to burn resources in a hurry. Just pull gradually with Passes you earn naturally. To track how far you are from the milestone and a 5-star, enter your count in GameVika's Pity Counter (/hsr/pity).
