Eidolons and Light Cone Superimposition in Honkai: Star Rail: How They Work and How to Unlock
30-second summary: Eidolons are per-character upgrades, capped at 6 levels (E1–E6), unlocked by pulling duplicate copies of that character from Warps; the Trailblazer is the exception and gets them from missions and Trailblaze Level rewards since they aren't in the gacha. Superimposition is the Light Cone equivalent: feeding duplicate copies of the same Light Cone raises its passive from Rank 1 up to a maximum of Rank 5. Both come mostly from duplicate pulls, so they are resource-heavy and entirely optional — an E0 character clears all content with good teams and Relics.
What is an Eidolon?
An Eidolon is a per-character upgrade system. Every character has exactly six Eidolon levels, labelled E1 through E6; a character with none unlocked is called E0. Each level grants a different bonus: some are pure stat boosts, others add brand-new mechanics to the character's kit. One reliable constant: the E3 and E5 nodes always level up abilities (typically +2 to the Skill, Ultimate or Talent, or +1 to the Basic ATK), while E1, E2, E4 and E6 vary by character. Think of it like a house — E0 is already a perfectly livable home, and each Eidolon is an extension you build on. An E0 character plays great; Eidolons make them stronger but are never required. To see exactly what each character's E1–E6 does, check that character's page on GameVika and read the Eidolon descriptions before you decide to invest.
What is Light Cone Superimposition?
Light Cones are the "weapons" of Star Rail. Superimposition (重畳 in Japanese) is the system for stacking duplicate copies of the same Light Cone. Every Light Cone has a passive ability that starts at Rank 1 and can be raised to a maximum of Rank 5. Each duplicate copy you feed in raises the rank by one, so reaching Rank 5 (often called S5) needs five copies total: one base plus four duplicates. Superimposing boosts the numerical part of the passive — for example a cone might raise DMG from 24% at Rank 1 up to 40% at Rank 5. Unlike characters (who only ever hold one copy), you can keep multiple Light Cones and equip them on different characters. But if you already have a spare of the same name, superimposing is usually the better use. One key rule: a Light Cone's passive only activates on a character whose Path matches the cone. Equip it on an off-Path character and you get the raw stats only, not the ability.
How to unlock Eidolons (and the Trailblazer exception)
The main way to unlock Eidolons is to pull a duplicate of a character you already own from Warps (the gacha). That extra copy turns into that character's "Eidolon" item, which unlocks one level. Beyond the gacha, you can also get them from Starlight Exchange, certain events, and temporarily inside some modes such as Simulated Universe curios. The Trailblazer is the big exception: they never appear in the gacha, so their Eidolons come from story missions, Trailblaze Level (account level) rewards, and the World Shop. Because a limited character's Eidolons depend mostly on pulling duplicates, taking one from E1 to E6 is very expensive. Before you commit, use GameVika's Pity Tracker to see how far you are from the guaranteed pity, and the Pull Simulator to estimate the average number of pulls each Eidolon level costs — rather than guessing by feel.
How to superimpose a cone, and the special material
The in-game steps are simple: open Characters → select the Light Cone → Enhance → pick the Superimpose tab → choose a same-named cone to feed in. Any cone used as material is consumed and destroyed. Two things players often forget: (1) a LOCKED cone (padlock icon) can't be selected as material — unlock it first. (2) Cones bought from the
Herta Shop (inside Simulated Universe) aren't upgraded with duplicates; they use a dedicated material called the Superimposer, traded for Herta Bonds you earn by running Simulated Universe. So, should you superimpose? Almost always yes: regardless of 3★, 4★ or 5★ rarity, if you have a spare of the same name and no better use for it, superimposing directly increases power. For newer players, a highly superimposed 4★ cone can even outperform an un-upgraded Rank 1 5★.

How much does E6 or S5 cost?
This is the most expensive part of the game, so learn a few fixed numbers before diving in. The limited character banner has a hard pity of 90 pulls — by the 90th pull at the latest you are guaranteed a 5★. But there's a 50/50 mechanic (your first 5★ may be a standard character), so in the WORST case it takes up to 180 pulls to be sure of the featured character: you lose the 50/50 at pull 90, then need another 90 (90+90). Remember 180 is the absolute guarantee, NOT the average — in practice the average is far lower, usually around 90–120 pulls to secure the featured character. Light Cones have their own banner with a lower hard pity of 80. To take a limited character to E6, you theoretically need to pull them 7 times (1 to own, plus 6 duplicates for E1–E6), which can run into the thousands of pulls. S5 on a cone needs 5 copies. The exact cost is pure luck, so don't estimate by feel. Enter your Warp count (jades/tickets) and goal into GameVika's Pull Simulator to run thousands of trials and see your odds of hitting E6 or S5, and open the Pity Tracker to monitor your current pity.
| Goal | Cost |
|---|---|
| First 5★ (hard pity) | ≤ 90 pulls |
| Guaranteed limited unit (worst case) | ≤ 180 pulls |
| Light Cone banner hard pity | ≤ 80 pulls |
| E6 a limited unit | Win 7 pulls (E0 + 6 dupes) |
| S5 a Light Cone | 5 copies |
Is E0 enough? How far should you go?
This is the classic beginner question, and the answer is reassuring: almost all content in the game is clearable with E0 characters — no Eidolons unlocked — as long as you build sensible teams and decent Relics. Eidolons and Superimposition are the seasoning: they make everything smoother and hit harder, but they are never a requirement to clear content. Free-to-play players should prioritise a diverse roster covering multiple roles, plus one suitable Light Cone per role, rather than dumping everything into E6 for a single character. For many characters the best-value stop is E1 or E2 — where the strongest mechanic unlocks — not necessarily E6. Since every character differs, read the E1–E6 descriptions on GameVika's character pages, then weigh it against your budget and how much you like that character. No Eidolon is truly "wasted"; it's just a matter of prioritising wisely.

What's the difference between Eidolons and Superimposition?
Eidolons are for characters: each caps at 6 levels (E1–E6), unlocked with duplicates of that character. Superimposition is for Light Cones: it caps at Rank 5, fed with duplicate copies of the same cone. Same idea — using copies to upgrade — but one is for the unit and one is for the weapon.
How do I unlock Eidolons for the Trailblazer?
The Trailblazer never appears in the gacha, so you can't pull duplicates. Their Eidolons come from story missions, Trailblaze Level (account level) rewards, and the World Shop. Just keep progressing the story and you'll gather them over time.
Should I superimpose 4-star Light Cones?
Yes. Regardless of rarity, if you have a spare cone of the same name and no better use for it, superimposing is always beneficial because it directly raises the numbers on the cone's passive. Just remember to unlock the padlock before selecting a copy as material.
What happens when I pull a duplicate character or cone?
For a character, the duplicate becomes an Eidolon item that unlocks one Eidolon level. For a Light Cone, the duplicate is used to superimpose it +1 rank. Nothing is ever "wasted" — duplicates always translate into power, though you can also choose to keep extra cones to equip on multiple characters.
