What Is Ascension in Genshin Impact: The 6 Tiers for Characters & Weapons, and How They Differ

Reflects patch 6.7 (2026-08-07) — the meta store re-ranks every patch, never edited by hand.
Quick answer
Ascension is the mechanic that breaks a level cap, applying to both characters and weapons, split into 6 fixed tiers (level cap 20→40→50→60→70→80→90). For characters, each tier needs enough Adventure Rank + Mora + materials, and tiers 1 and 4 also unlock a passive talent. For weapons, the same 6-tier framework applies but uses a completely different material set (day-gated Domain materials + enemy drops) — the two systems are entirely separate, sharing no material pool or Mora budget.

The 6 CHARACTER ascension tiers: level cap · Adventure Rank · Mora · what unlocks

This is the table we already published and self-verified in What Is a Character [1], repeated here in full because this is the article actually about "Ascension":

TierLevel capAdventure Rank neededMoraUnlocks
1401520,0001st passive talent

3603060,000Base stat increase

58040100,000Base stat increase

Total 420,000 Mora for Ascension alone (Talents not included) [1] — the exact same number repeats for every character in our database.

Where WEAPON Ascension differs from character Ascension — and why we are NOT posting an Adventure Rank table for it

Weapons also ascend across the exact same 6-tier framework (level cap 20→40→50→60→70→80→90, same as characters) [2], but with a COMPLETELY different material set: (1) a weapon ascension material from a Domain — only available on certain fixed days of the week, (2) an elite enemy drop, (3) a common enemy drop, plus its own Mora cost [2]. The total Mora to max one weapon varies by rarity: a 5★ weapon costs roughly 1,132,000 Mora (907,000 regular leveling + 225,000 Ascension), a 4★ weapon roughly 755,000 Mora [3] — entirely separate from the character Mora in the table above.

We deliberately did NOT publish a "which tier needs which Adventure Rank" table for weapons the way we did for characters above: our internal data has no such table, and the Mora figures above are currently confirmed by only one source, not yet cross-checked against a second independent one [3]. Publishing a table that hasn't cleared two independent sources is a bigger risk than leaving it out — a missing table beats a wrong one.

The total lifetime material table — the 2 EXP rows are still OMITTED, we searched a second time

What Is a Character already added up 5,377,500 Mora total for one character's Ascension + Talents combined (420,000 Ascension + 4,957,500 Talents), plus the counts for local specialty/enemy drops/talent books/Crowns of Insight [1], and that table deliberately dropped two rows: character EXP books and the Mora spent leveling with EXP.

We (worker #28, 2026-08-07) searched a SECOND time before writing this article: (a) re-scanned our entire internal data (genshin-char-mats.php, genshin-mechanic.php, genshin-hoyowiki.php — 546 tutorials + 52 definitions) for a per-level EXP cost table, (b) checked genshin.hoyoverse.com/support.hoyoverse.com for an official publication of per-level EXP cost. Neither turned one up: (a) it doesn't exist in our data, (b) HoYoverse has never officially published a per-level EXP cost table — the "8,362,650 EXP" total figure some other sites circulate traces back to community self-calculation, not an official publication, so we refuse to copy it [4]. ⇒ We are keeping the same decision to omit those 2 rows — a missing number beats copying one we can't verify.

Numbered footnotes — 4 claims, 4 sources, not lumped into one line at the bottom

FAQ

Are Ascension and leveling up the same thing?
No. Leveling up (spending EXP) only raises the level within the CURRENT cap; Ascension is what raises that cap itself. Once you hit the cap without meeting Ascension requirements (Adventure Rank/Mora/materials), leveling stops until you clear the next Ascension tier.
Once Ascension tier 6 is done, do talents automatically hit level 10?
No. Ascension only opens the CEILING a talent can reach (tier 6 opens the ceiling all the way to level 10); actually leveling each talent still has to be done SEPARATELY with Mora + talent books + monster drops + a Crown of Insight per skill — two separate things, Ascension does not do it automatically.
