Wishing (Gacha) in Genshin Impact: Banner Types, Pity & the 50/50

Reflects patch 6.7 (2026-08-07) — the meta store re-ranks every patch, never edited by hand.
Quick answer
Wishing is Genshin Impact's gacha system — spending Fates (bought with Primogems) for a random pull of 3-5★ items on one of 5 banner types, each with its own pity counter: you're guaranteed a 5★ at or before pull 90 (characters) / 80 (weapons). On limited banners, the first 5★ has a 50% chance of being the featured character/weapon (the 50/50) — lose it, and the next 5★ on that same banner is guaranteed to be the featured one.

The 5 Wish banner types

  • Standard Wish: permanent, doesn't change between versions, contains every standard 5★ character/weapon.
  • Character Event Wish: a limited banner featuring 1 five-star character plus a few four-star ones, rotating each phase of a version.
  • Weapon Event Wish: a limited banner for weapons, with an "Epitomized Path" system letting you pick in advance which weapon you're guaranteed to get.
  • Beginners' Wish: only for new accounts, guarantees a specific 4-star character early at a cheaper cost.
  • Chronicled Wish: a special banner that bundles older characters/weapons around a theme each run — not always open.

How pity works

Per the data we've verified: hard pity is pull 90 for character banners, pull 80 for weapon banners — reach that pull without a 5★ yet, and that pull is GUARANTEED to be one. Before that there's also soft pity: starting around pull 74, the odds of a 5★ on any given pull jump well above the base rate, even though the publisher hasn't officially published the exact figures behind this. Each of the 5 banner types keeps an INDEPENDENT pity counter — draining your character banner's counter has no effect on the weapon banner's counter.

What the 50/50 is, and what Capturing Radiance changes since patch 5.0

On limited banners, once you land your first 5★ (whether via soft or hard pity), the system flips the 50/50 coin: 50% chance it's the banner's featured character/weapon, 50% chance it's a random standard 5★ instead. Lose the 50/50, and the banner remembers — the very next 5★ on that SAME banner is guaranteed to be the featured one (no second coin flip needed). According to the publisher's own official announcement, starting in patch 5.0 every Character Event Wish also has the Capturing Radiance mechanic: when you pull a non-guaranteed 5★ (i.e. one that could lose the 50/50), you have a chance to trigger Capturing Radiance, which boosts your odds of winning that 50/50 — the publisher's stated goal is cutting down how often players lose the 50/50 several times in a row.

FAQ

How many Primogems does 90 Wishes cost?
Each pull costs 160 Primogems, so 90 pulls cost exactly 14,400 Primogems if you go all the way to hard pity without hitting a 5★ earlier.
What happens if I lose the 50/50 to a standard 5★ on a limited banner?
A limited banner only has 1 "featured" 5★ — losing the 50/50 gives you one of the STANDARD 5★ characters/weapons instead (not useless junk, still a full character, just not the one you were aiming for), and the banner remembers it so your next 5★ there is guaranteed to be the featured one.
Does pity carry over across updates?
Yes — each banner type's pity counter is saved permanently per account, and never resets on a daily/weekly/version basis; it only changes when you actually land a 5★ on that specific banner type.
