What Are Adventure Rank and World Level in Genshin Impact

Reflects patch 6.7 (2026-08-07) — the meta store re-ranks every patch, never edited by hand.
Quick answer
Adventure Rank (AR) is the overall level of your ACCOUNT (not of any single character), raised by earning Adventure EXP from almost everything you do in the game. AR sets the difficulty/reward richness through the paired World Level (WL) system, and it's the UNLOCK requirement for a whole list of major systems: the "Tempered in Practice" training content at AR14, the Spiral Abyss and Stygian Onslaught at AR20, the Genius Invokation TCG at AR32, and the Imaginarium Theater at AR35.

What Adventure Rank is, and how it goes up

Adventure Rank is a single level stat for the whole account, raised by Adventure EXP earned from nearly everything: finishing quests, opening chests, exploring the map, clearing Daily Commissions, killing bosses... According to the publisher's own statements, once an account hits the AR level cap, any extra Adventure EXP automatically converts into in-game currency instead of being wasted. AR isn't per-character — every character in your roster is capped at a max level tied to your account's CURRENT AR (aside from a few special challenge modes with their own rules).

The Adventure Rank milestones and what they unlock

Adventure RankUnlocks
14"Tempered in Practice" — a permanent, periodic challenge running in 12-week phases
20The Spiral Abyss and the Stygian Onslaught
32The Genius Invokation TCG (card game)
35The Imaginarium Theater (and Envisaged Echoes after clearing Act 6 of the Theater)

These are the 4 milestones we can confirm with certainty from the underlying mechanic data in our database — AR also unlocks plenty of smaller things (inventory slots, max friend count...) not all listed here since they're not the focus of this concept article.

What World Level is — and why we don't publish a full table

World Level moves in lockstep with Adventure Rank: the higher your AR, the higher your WL, the tougher enemies get — but in exchange, drop rates for rare loot (5★ materials, 5★ artifacts...) go up too. That's why many new players notice enemies suddenly get "way harder" right after an AR-up — it's not a bug, WL just auto-increased along with it. Players can choose to delay a WL increase for a while through an in-game menu if they don't feel ready yet. ⚠ We don't publish a full "which AR maps to which WL" table here: the internal and official sources we could check only confirm a handful of scattered milestones, not enough to build a complete WL0-WL9 table without guessing — a missing table beats a wrong number.

FAQ

Can Adventure Rank go down if I mess something up?
No — AR only ever goes up, never down, even if you abandon a quest or fail a challenge.
What if I want to level a character past my current AR limit?
You can't — the game caps EVERY character's max level according to the account's current AR (via the ascension tiers); further ascension is locked until your AR is high enough, with no way around that cap.
Is rushing AR up as fast as possible always a good idea?
Not necessarily — rushing AR while your characters/gear are still weak pushes WL up too early, making enemies tougher before you're ready for them; most guides recommend balancing AR gains with character growth instead of rushing one-sidedly.
