Wuthering Waves Resonance Chain Guide: Is Dupe Value Worth It?
What a Resonance Chain actually is
Every Resonator in Wuthering Waves has a Resonance Chain of 6 Sequence nodes (labeled S1 through S6). Pulling a duplicate copy of a character you already own does not give you a second unit — it unlocks the next node on that chain instead, usually granting a passive buff, a stat boost, or in some cases a genuinely new mechanic.
- S0 = the base character with zero chain nodes unlocked.
- S6 = the fully maxed chain, unlocking the strongest node.
- Chains are per-character: dupes of
Encore only ever feed Encore's own chain, never anyone else's.
Because every 5★ pull on a featured banner risks landing on a character you already own, chain value is the thing that decides whether that “wasted” pull was actually wasted.
The real cost to fully max a Resonance Chain (S6)
Fully unlocking every node from S1 to S6 does not mean pulling the character 6 times. Because the base copy you already own does not count as a node, you need 7 total copies of the same character — the original plus 6 duplicates — to reach S6. Two independent community sources independently confirm this exact figure.
Plan around that number before deciding whether a chain is worth chasing: on a 50/50 character banner, 7 copies is a multi-banner commitment, not a side goal you pick up by accident.

Not all Sequence nodes are equal
The single biggest mistake newer players make is assuming every node on a chain matters the same amount. In practice most chains front-load or back-load their value onto one or two specific nodes, and the rest are minor stat sticks.
- Some nodes only add flat ATK%, Crit Rate, or Crit DMG — nice, but replaceable by better Echo rolls.
- Other nodes change a skill's behavior entirely: extra hits, reduced cooldowns, or a stat that unlocks a new rotation.
- S6 is usually the headline node and the reason people push a chain at all — it is where kit-defining effects tend to land.
Verdict: read what a specific node does before committing pulls to it — a chain with six mediocre nodes is a much worse target than one with a single game-changing S6.
When a 4★ chain beats a 5★ chain
Rarity is not the same as value once chains enter the picture, and this is where budget players can genuinely outperform whales who spread thin across many low-Sequence 5★s.
- Danjin S6, Sanhua S6, and Mortefi S6 are prime examples: because 4★s appear far more often through the guaranteed 10-pull floor, players can realistically max these chains, and a maxed 4★ chain can match or exceed a 5★ sitting at S0-S1.
- 4★ chains are cheap to build precisely because 4★ pulls are guaranteed every 10 convenes regardless of which banner is running.
- This makes 4★ sub-DPS and support units some of the best long-term investments in the whole roster.
If Astrite is tight, finishing a strong 4★'s chain is often the better return than gambling on a second copy of a 5★ you barely use.
Collab and niche units: Lucy and Rebecca
A few Resonators break the “chains are just padding” rule because their early nodes unlock mechanics the base kit does not have at all.
- Lucy and Rebecca both scale hard through S1 to S3 — these early nodes noticeably raise their ceiling rather than just adding small percentages, making them a rare case where chasing a second or third copy is worth prioritizing over banner-hopping to a new character.
- This is different from most of the roster, where S1-S3 nodes are minor and the real prize sits at S6.
- Treat any unit flagged this way as an exception, not the rule — check a specific character's notes before assuming early nodes matter.
Verdict: for Lucy/Rebecca specifically, budgeting extra pulls for early Sequences is a reasonable plan; for most of the cast, it is not.
Free chain value: Rover and F2P chains
Rover is the one Resonator where chain progress does not require gacha luck at all.
- Story and event rewards hand Rover 4 free Resonance Chain nodes before any pulling is involved, since Rover is the player-created protagonist rather than a limited pull.
- Rover's S6 node is also unique on the roster: it grants a RES-shred effect found nowhere else in the game, which is why pushing Rover's remaining nodes is one of the few “dupe” goals that does not compete with a featured banner at all.
- Because these nodes are free or near-free, they should be treated as a baseline every Rover build works toward, not an optional luxury.
This makes Rover the one character where chain investment is close to risk-free — there is no 50/50 standing between you and the payoff.
Weapon banner vs. chasing a dupe
Wuthering Waves' weapon Convene has no 50/50 at all — every 5★ pulled there is the featured weapon, full stop. That single fact should anchor most “dupe vs weapon” decisions.
- An S0 character paired with a strong signature weapon reliably out-performs a low-Sequence character stuck with a generic weapon, especially for units whose kit does not lean on early chain nodes.
- Since the weapon banner skips the coin flip entirely, spending Astrite there is more predictable than gambling on a repeat 50/50 for a chain node that only adds a few percent.
- Reserve dupe-chasing for the flagged exceptions above (Lucy/Rebecca, cheap 4★ S6 targets, free Rover nodes) rather than treating every character as chain-worthy by default.
Verdict: when Astrite is limited, default to S0-plus-weapon over rolling for a chain node, and only break that rule for units where a specific Sequence is confirmed to matter.
Planning chain pulls around pity
Because pity carries over between successive banners of the same type, chasing a chain rarely means starting from zero on every attempt.
- If a first copy landed early off soft pity, a second copy toward S1 can arrive far sooner than the average 54-pull estimate, since leftover pity from the previous cycle rolls forward.
- Losing the 50/50 on a character banner still guarantees the very next 5★ is the featured unit — so a “wasted” 50/50 loss while dupe-chasing is capped, not compounding.
- Use the pity calculator and the character database on this site together: check current pity before a banner to see how many pulls a chain node realistically costs, and check a character's specific Sequence notes before deciding it is worth chasing at all.
Treat chain goals as a multi-banner project rather than a single-patch gamble — carried-over pity is what makes S2-S6 realistic for anything beyond the free Rover nodes.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Resonance Chain in Wuthering Waves?
It is the game's duplicate system: pulling a copy of a Resonator you already own unlocks one of 6 Sequence nodes (S1-S6) on that character instead of giving you a second unit.
Is a 4★ Resonance Chain ever better than a 5★ one?
Yes. Because 4★s are guaranteed every 10 pulls, chains like Danjin S6, Sanhua S6, or Mortefi S6 are realistic to max, and a fully built 4★ chain can match or beat a 5★ sitting at S0 or S1.
Should I chase a chain or pull for a new weapon?
Default to an S0 character paired with a strong weapon, since the weapon banner has no 50/50 at all. Chase a chain only for confirmed exceptions such as Lucy/Rebecca's S1-S3 or cheap 4★ S6 targets.
Does Rover need gacha pulls to build a chain?
No. Rover receives 4 Resonance Chain nodes for free through story and event progress, and Rover's S6 is unique for granting a RES-shred effect not found on any other character.
