Profile Icons in Pokémon TCG Pocket: Every Way to Unlock One

Your profile icon is the avatar shown on your card and in battle — here's how starting icons work and every channel to earn more.

Summary
Profile icons are the avatar picture on your player card, shown to opponents in battle and on your public profile. You start with a handful for free, then earn more through card-collection milestones (owning a set number of copies of a specific Pokémon), Themed Collection completion, a set's Pokédex-completion milestone, and time-limited Get Challenge-style events. Changing your icon takes a few taps from your profile screen, with no unlock cost involved.

What a Profile Icon Is

A profile icon is the avatar shown on your player card — visible to opponents during a match and on your public profile page. Like emblems and sleeves, it's a purely cosmetic identity element with no gameplay effect.

Starting Icons You Already Have

A handful of icons featuring well-known Pokémon are unlocked automatically from the start, before you complete anything at all — no missions, no card collection required. These give every new player a usable set of icons from their very first login.

The 4 Ways to Earn More Icons

Beyond the starting set, two independent sources confirm the same four unlock channels:

  • Card-collection milestone — own a set number of copies (commonly 3 or 5) of one specific Pokémon's card
  • Themed Collection reward — completing a Themed Collection unlocks its matching icon
  • Set Pokédex-completion milestone — own every card up to a set rarity threshold within one expansion
  • Get Challenge-style event exchange — trade event currency for an icon during a time-limited window

How to Change Your Icon

Changing your icon is quick and free, and only ever offers icons you've already unlocked:

  • Tap your profile icon at the top of the main screen
  • Tap the edit or pencil icon
  • Pick the icon you want from your unlocked collection
  • Confirm to save your new profile icon

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to unlock every icon before I can use one?
You can only equip icons you've unlocked — either a starting icon or one earned through the channels above. Locked icons simply aren't selectable yet.
What's the easiest way to get new icons early?
Card-collection milestones, since they only require owning a set number of copies of one Pokémon — something that happens naturally as you open packs, with no extra objective to chase.
Do profile icons expire or become unobtainable?
Icons tied to a Get Challenge-style event are generally only available during that event's window; card-collection and Pokédex-based icons stay obtainable for as long as that set or card remains available.
Does my profile icon affect matchmaking or battle in any way?
No — it's purely a visual identity element, with no effect on decks, matchmaking, or battle outcomes.
