P5X Role & Tier Guide
Official role/element/Persona data for all 49 Phantom Thieves, plus 4 independent community tier lists compared side by side.
Most tier list pages give you one opinion. This page has two parts: first, a role reference table built straight from the game's own data (role, element, rarity, starting Persona, how to obtain) — nothing here is anyone's opinion. Second, a comparison of 4 independent community tier lists placed side by side, so you can see exactly where they agree, where they disagree by 2-3 ranks, and why.
Character Role & Attribute Reference
Straight from the game's own data files — role, element, rarity and starting Persona are facts, not opinions.

Elucidator — the off-field support role. Some community guides call this same role "Navigator"; both names refer to the same role, which the game itself calls Elucidator.
Multi-Source Tier Comparison
4 independently-run community tier lists, placed side by side — not merged into one opinion.
Every tier-list site out there only shows you their own ranking. We put 4 of them next to each other, tell you exactly where they disagree and by how much, and explain the most likely reason (usually: a different server version, a different scoring method, or a different playstyle assumption). You get the full picture in one page instead of opening 4 separate tabs.
Japanese guide — main table
Japanese · updated Aug 4, 2026 · covers all 49 released characters · scale: SS > S+ > S > A+ > A > B
Their own stated criteria: damage/buff strength, survivability/healing, and how many team comps a character fits into. Characters that see wide use across many comps score higher than ones that only shine in a narrow niche.
English wiki-style guide
English · updated Jul 30, 2026 (patch v4.6) · covers all 49 released characters · scale: Crown > SS > S > A > B > C
Their own stated criteria: Crown-tier characters can "ignore or break the game's mechanics" and fit any team even unoptimized; SS clears most content without full investment; each lower tier needs progressively more investment or a narrower team to perform.
Asia-server community tracker
Korean · fan-run, unofficial · covers 45 of 49 released characters (2 newest not yet placed) · scale: T0 > T0.5 > T1 > T2 > T3 > T4
Built around competitive/challenge content at level 80 with skills near-maxed; explicitly states two characters can rank differently on Global vs the Korean server because the Korean server has already applied a later balance patch ("Imagery Core V4.7") that our server hasn't received yet.
⚠ This tracker runs on the Asia server, which is ahead of the version most players are on. Treat its placements as a preview of where the meta may be headed, not as today's ranking on our server.
Japanese guide — curated picks
Japanese · updated Aug 1, 2026 · covers 30 of 49 released characters (their curated top picks only, not the full roster) · scale: SS > S > A > B > C
Their own stated criteria: general usefulness and high damage output; 5★ are scored unenhanced, 4★ at their recommended enhancement level; team-wide synergy is factored in; the protagonist is left out because his power depends entirely on which Persona is equipped.
Each column keeps that source's own tier labels and scale — they are not converted into a single shared scale, so you can compare the actual verdicts, not a lossy average.
Where the sources disagree the most
Across the 4 tables above, three characters stand out with the widest gap: Shoki Ikenami, Chizuko Nagao and Shun Kano all sit in the bottom half of the Japanese main guide's scale, but near the very top of the Asia-server tracker.
The likely reason: the Asia-server tracker reflects a build ahead of ours, where these three support/buff characters may have already received the kind of balance changes or new teammates that make them shine — changes our server hasn't seen yet. It's a preview, not a contradiction.
5th source: the overseas/Taiwan build guide
Japanese, covering the Taiwan/overseas build · last updated Oct 15, 2025 — the site itself says updates have stopped, so treat it as historical reference only
Judges characters by how well they perform in the overseas build specifically; explicitly notes that a character can rank lower there than in Japan if a stronger alternative had already launched overseas, and that Japan-version buffs eventually reach the overseas build later.
Shown separately because its scale (7 tiers) and its snapshot date (Oct 2025) don't line up cleanly with the 4 tables above — folding it in would have meant guessing.
Names we could not confidently match
- 鹿野苺 — Not yet on our site — these are upcoming characters (see our upcoming-characters list) that this guide already covered ahead of their release here.
- 片山久未 — Not yet on our site — these are upcoming characters (see our upcoming-characters list) that this guide already covered ahead of their release here.
- 李瑤鈴・太平楽 — Likely an alternate costume/version of a character we already have, but the naming isn't clear enough to attach a confident label — shown here only in its original Japanese text.
- 佐原海夕・夏日 — Likely an alternate costume/version of a character we already have, but the naming isn't clear enough to attach a confident label — shown here only in its original Japanese text.
- YUI・幻彩 — Likely an alternate costume/version of a character we already have, but the naming isn't clear enough to attach a confident label — shown here only in its original Japanese text.
- 宮下美波・夏日 — Likely an alternate costume/version of a character we already have, but the naming isn't clear enough to attach a confident label — shown here only in its original Japanese text.
- 琴音モンターニュ・漫舞 — Likely an alternate costume/version of a character we already have, but the naming isn't clear enough to attach a confident label — shown here only in its original Japanese text.
6th source: long-term community sentiment
English · a long-term community value poll (about 400 upvotes) · not a full ranked table — see note below
This community poll ranks characters by long-term value and pull-priority (S++/God down to Useless) rather than by pure combat performance today — a different question from the 4 tables above. The original ranking image can't be turned back into text, so we're not reconstructing a full table here; these are specific points raised in the discussion, paraphrased, not full quotes.
- Mio Natsukawa — Several commenters argued Mio (Matoi) should rank much lower long-term, since she's only really used alongside one specific debuffer and struggles to fit elsewhere.
- Kira Kitazato — Multiple long-time players pushed back on Kira (Messa) being ranked near the bottom, saying that after his kit rework he performs well in every mode regardless of enemy weakness.
- Morgana — One detailed reply argued Morgana deserves a higher spot for being the only healer who can revive through Resonance and inflict a debuff while healing — a combination no one else offers.
- Makoto Niijima — A commenter suggested Makoto (Niijima/Queen) should rank lower because she's largely locked into pairing with Chizuko (Vino), which limits team flexibility.
- Yumi Shiina — One reply pointed out that Yumi (Phoebe) is fine but was gradually powercrept by newer Navigators released roughly eight months later.
One source we couldn't include
A well-known Japanese guide site publishes a monthly "strongest characters" tier table, and it's referenced by name in our source archive — but only as a sidebar link, without the actual table attached. Rather than guess at its rankings, we're leaving it out until we have the real table.
Wonder isn't in either table
Wonder is the Wild Card protagonist — his role and power depend entirely on which Persona he has equipped, so 3 of our 4 main sources leave him out of their tier lists on purpose (not an oversight). One exception: the overseas-build guide does rank him, placing him in its S-tier under his birth name.
