Recommended Drive Discs

Woodpecker adds CRIT on hit (Hugo often strikes from behind during Totalize), and the 2pc Polar Metal adds Ice DMG.
Flip to 4pc Polar Metal to maximize Ice DMG once a full Ice-Stun team already gives you enough CRIT.

Quick verdict

Worth pulling and building if you enjoy explosive quick-swap play: a single Totalize beat hits absurdly hard, and his kit makes capping CRIT easy. His strength is a short but heavy burst window; his weakness is a heavy reliance on Stun (best with a double-Ice-Stun setup like Lighter/Lycaon) and the need to time your swaps precisely — mistime it and you lose the buff.

Stat targets

Level 60 targets: Crit Rate 88% is priority #1, Crit DMG 130-150%, ATK ~3,000. Why 88%: Hugo's Core Passive self-grants +12% Crit Rate, so 88% on paper = ~100% IN COMBAT, guaranteeing his finisher (とどめの一撃, the bulk of his damage) always crits for consistent output. Level 60 base: HP 7,940 / ATK 844 / DEF 616; the Core Passive alone adds ~+900 ATK, so pour farming into Crit rather than ATK. Substat priority: Crit Rate > Crit DMG > ATK%.

Rotation & combos

1) OPENER: send in 2 Stun/Break agents (Lycaon/Lighter/Dialyn) to build Break value; keep Hugo off-field to save his Energy and Decibels. 2) ON BREAK: use a Chain (連携) to bring Hugo in LAST, then fire an EX Special (強化特殊) or Ultimate (終結) → triggers Totalize (累算), dumping all remaining Break time into ONE huge finisher while re-accumulating up to 25% Break value. 3) CHAIN ORDER: the Totalize multiplier scales with remaining Break time (peaks at >=15s), so make Hugo the LAST chain link; if you run Lycaon and he didn't cause the break, go Lycaon -> Hugo. 4) BOSS COMBO: fire Hugo's first Chain, CANCEL the second, quick-swap to a Break agent to re-break, then Chain Hugo again (two Hugo chains — big damage plus fast Decibel gain). 5) LOOP: swap back to Break agents to rebuild Break value for the next cycle.

Pros
  • Massive per-Break burst: one finisher converts the remaining Break time into huge damage, and the combo is simple, so he's easy to deal damage with in any situation.
  • Very fast Break cycle: the finisher instantly re-accumulates up to 25% Break value, so he increases the NUMBER of Breaks even against break-resistant bosses.
  • Self-sufficient buffing: his Core Passive raises ATK per Stun ally in the team, so he needs no dedicated Support/shielder — Hugo rarely competes for the scarce supports, making a second endgame team easy to build.
  • His Chain (連携) has strong AoE mob-gathering, so beyond boss fights he also clears packs of small enemies cleanly.
Cons
  • Very stat-hungry: needs ~88% Crit Rate to guarantee the finisher always crits — demanding disc RNG and heavy farming.
  • Heavily reliant on a team with 2 strong Stun/Break agents (Lycaon/Lighter/Dialyn) to open Break; solo he doesn't shine, and his signature Myriad Eclipse is near-mandatory (his main DEF-ignore source).
  • Demands quick-swap timing: the Chain order (Hugo must be the last link) and the two-Chain boss combo have fairly tight timing — mistime it and the Totalize multiplier drops.

Recommended Bangboo

Gabbett — Ice bangboo that triggers its Additional Ability with 2+ Ice agents —... Snap — S-rank bangboo that directly buffs damage dealt and never goes to wast...

Endgame mode fit

Shiyu Defense

Excellent in Shiyu Defense: a single-target boss mode — Hugo's per-Break finisher melts high-HP bosses right in the Break window, and since he needs no dedicated support he splits easily across both halves. rank him a top-class Ice attacker.

Deadly Assault

Also strong in Deadly Assault: his ultra-fast Break cycle plus big burst racks up score on tanky, drawn-out bosses; pairing Dialyn/Lycaon (Break-debuff amplifiers) pushes top scores. As a Break-reliant DPS he thrives in DA's sustained boss fights.

Core Skill2

Core Passive: Terminating Verdict
When Chain Attack: Trick of Fate hits an enemy or Hugo's attacks Stun an enemy, Hugo gains the Dark Abyss Reverb state for 6s, and repeated triggers reset the duration. During this state, Hugo's CRIT Rate increases by 12% and CRIT DMG increases by 25%. When there are 1/2 Stun characters in your squad, Hugo's ATK increases by 25/75. When the Finishing Move of EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter - Punishment or Ultimate: Blaspheme hits an enemy while they are Stunned, it triggers the Totalize effect, increasing the DMG Multiplier of the skill's Finishing Move by 500%. Additionally, the Totalize effect further increases the skill's DMG multiplier based on the remaining Stun time of the enemy when triggered: for each remaining second of Stun time from the portion that is less than or equal to 5s, the skill's DMG multiplier increases by 140%; for each remaining second of Stun time from the portion between 5 and 15s, the skill's DMG multiplier increases by 50%. The total increase can raise the skill's DMG multiplier by a maximum of 1,700%. After Hugo triggers the Totalize effect, the enemy's Stunned state will immediately end. Based on the remaining Stun time at the moment Totalize is triggered, a certain amount of Daze will be accumulated. For every second of Stun time remaining, 5% Daze is accumulated, up to a maximum Daze equivalent to 25% of the enemy's maximum Daze. When EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter - Punishment hits an enemy, if the enemy is not Stunned, the Daze accumulated by the skill increases by 20%.*Stats shown are at Base level.

Additional Ability: Prelude to Finality
When another character in your squad is a Stun character or shares the same attribute: Chain Attack: Trick of Fate's DMG increases by 15%, with a further increase of 35% against normal enemies. When Totalize is triggered, the DMG dealt by the skill increases by 40%. EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter - Punishment generates an additional Energy when triggering Totalize on normal enemies. The Energy generation effect can trigger once every 30s.

Mindscapes — how far is worth it?

M1 Child of Hatred Situational

When triggering the Totalize effect in the Dark Abyss Reverb state, the skill's CRIT Rate is increased by an additional 12%, and CRIT DMG by 30%. "So, do not deny your own desires, do not resist your own ambition. This is the talent you were born with, the best gift fate has ever given you!" "Admit it, deep within your heart lies a spark, yearning to ignite a raging inferno that will burn everything down—" "And I, am that spark." "Yeah, I know. I've always known."

M2 The Child Within Worth it

When Ultimate: Blaspheme triggers Totalize, it will not end the enemy's Stunned state. Additionally, when Totalize is triggered, the skill will ignore 15% of the enemy's DEF. "Family is an everlasting, unavoidable curse placed upon a person." "No matter how much you grow, no matter where you go, that curse will forever follow you like a shadow." "When you fall to rock bottom or climb to your peak, it will appear, turning you back into that helpless, powerless child who can do nothing but hide in the closet and weep." "Unless you truly see him, embrace him." Some pain can only be healed when it is seen and accepted.

M3 Fruit of the Poisonous Tree Low value

Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2 They say that the flowers that bloom in the abyss are always soaked in malice, just like how a poisonous tree can't bear safe fruit. But all fruit falls. So, he broke himself into a rain of shattered pieces. The rain covered the earth, and each dewdrop reflected a fresh new dawn.

M4 Dramatic Theory Situational

After a Charged Shot hits an enemy, Hugo's attacks against that target will ignore 12% of that target's Ice RES for 15s, repeated triggers reset the duration. Justice, evil, madness, reason, charm, stubbornness. He's composed of countless faces. "So, which is the real you?" "That's not important. How about, instead, you tell me, Lycaon—" "What kind of person do you see in me?"

M5 Nirvana Low value

Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2 The world doesn't need to be destroyed and rebuilt, and no one has the right to do such. But a person can. So, he shattered himself and was reborn. "If I must fall, let me fall. The person I am meant to become will surely catch me."

M6 Crown of Thorns Worth it

All shooting attacks that hit enemies trigger the Dark Abyss Reverb state, lasting up to 6s, and repeated triggers reset the duration. Additionally, whenever any skill triggers the Totalize effect, that DMG is further increased by 60%. The Finishing Move of EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter - Punishment also triggers the Totalize effect when hitting an enemy that isn't Stunned, boosting the DMG multiplier of the Finishing Move by a fixed 1,000 %. He walked willingly toward the endless abyss, letting the thorns on the ground tear at his wounds. Where the blood spread, broken dignity and stubbornness began to sprout from the wounds. He picked up the blood-soaked thorns to crown himself. "There's only ever been one person who can kill me or save me... And that is me."

Background & Lore

Hugo calls himself a collector and runs a fairly successful gallery, mingling with the "elite" of New Eridu. In truth, he's the leader of the phantom thieves syndicate, Mockingbird — and Lycaon's former partner. Despite his cruel (edgy and dramatic) words, deep down he has his own sense of fairness and justice. Records suggest that Hugo had a troubled childhood. As the illegitimate son of the Ravenlocks, a long-established TOPS family, he was rejected by his mother from an early age because of his heterochromatic eyes. His father bought him back like a cheap commodity, using him to provoke a cutthroat succession battle between his children. In that brutal struggle, the only one kind to Hugo — his sister, Serena — became the first to fall. The ones who orchestrated her death pinned the blame on Hugo, thinking it would destroy him. But to their shock, their father actually praised Hugo's actions, calling them the very traits a worthy heir should possess. After running away from his family, Hugo met Lycaon and Jack and learned to be a phantom thief. After Jack passed away, Hugo and Lycaon formed Mockingbird together. Later, during one of Mockingbird's missions, Hugo came face-to-face with his father. In a brief moment of hesitation, he chose not to take his revenge and kill him — an act of mercy that ended up costing the lives of many innocent people. His close friend Lycaon, due to a misunderstanding born from those circumstances, broke ties with him and ultimately left Mockingbird. After drifting on his own for a while, Hugo met Vivian, a girl who reminded him of his sister Serena. He took her under his wing and reformed the Mockingbird syndicate. Increase Trust to Close to unlock more Back during his time with the Ravenlock family, Hugo once ate a piece of cake that his older brother liked. In retaliation, the other children forced him to eat an entire table's worth of desserts. Ever since, the taste of anything sweet makes him want to throw up — likely due to PTSD. But due to his hypoglycemia, he needs sugar to keep his body functioning properly. Hugo forces himself to eat sweets over and over, pushing through the nausea to overcome the pain. Note: Neither Lycaon nor Vivian knows about this, and Hugo once asked you to keep it a secret from them. Belle Let's just say, the fact that Hugo hasn't gone off the deep end or become a sociopath is already quite the achievement. Wise Sometimes I wonder what Hugo would've been like if he'd had a normal upbringing... But then again, it's those very experiences that made him who he is.

How to read this build page

Every Agent build page has 4 parts: a stat table by level, W-Engine/Drive Disc suggestions, a Mindscape roadmap, and recommended teams. Read them in that order — stats tell you "what you need", gear tells you "where to get it", Mindscape tells you "is it worth pulling", teams tell you "who to pair with". The section below explains how to read each part, and it applies the same way to every character on the site.

How to read the stat table and level

The stat table shows values at the ascension breakpoints (usually the final one, e.g. Lv60) — these are BASE stats with no gear added, useful for comparing Agents or checking whether you've ascended far enough. CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG are shown separately because they set the damage ceiling once Drive Disc substats stack on top. If your real stats are lower than the table, you likely haven't fully ascended or leveled yet — it's not a build mistake.

Why the W-Engine and Drive Disc picks make sense

Most Agents have a "signature" W-Engine designed for their exact role, plus a few cheaper standard-banner substitutes. Missing the signature isn't a dead end — most Agents keep most of their power with a well-matched substitute, just short by some amount of total damage.

  • Drive Disc sets (2pc + 4pc) are picked for the set effect that fits that Agent's playstyle (mono-element, Anomaly, stun, and so on).
  • Substats follow a priority that changes by role: Attack-type Agents usually chase CRIT Rate/CRIT DMG before ATK%; Anomaly-type Agents add Anomaly Proficiency to that mix; Stun/Support roles often value survivability or energy stats over pure CRIT.

These weights differ per character — follow the exact substat priority table above rather than applying one formula to every role.

Is Mindscape worth chasing

General rule: M0 (no duplicates) already clears the game's hardest content, even for S-rank Agents. Mindscape is a duplicate-fueled upgrade system, and each level costs more resources for a smaller power gain. For most Agents, the best value stop is usually M1–M2 (where some key effects unlock), while M6 is almost always for players chasing the absolute ceiling, not a requirement. Check the Mindscape section in the table above for that specific Agent's numbers.

Skill priority by role

There's no single order for every Agent, but the general pattern by role is:

  • Attack: level the main damage skill first (Basic or Special Attack depending on kit), Dash/Dodge last.
  • Stun: prioritize whichever skill builds Daze/Stun fastest, since the stun window is where the whole team dumps damage.
  • Support: prioritize buff or energy-generating skills over personal damage — this role's value comes from lifting the whole team.
  • Anomaly: prioritize the skill that stacks anomaly buildup, since most of the damage comes from the triggered effect, not the direct hit.

Always level the Core Skill steadily alongside the rest — it's a baseline stat that affects the whole rotation, not just one move.

Where to dig deeper

This section only teaches you how to read the page — for deeper comparisons, use the dedicated tools:

  • Teams for full in-game comps, including Bangboo and rotation order.
  • Disc score to check how your current gear scores against the benchmark.

Hugo FAQ

What is the best W-Engine for Hugo?

Hugo performs best with Myriad Eclipse. See alternatives and required stats in the Gear section above.

Is Hugo worth pulling?

Worth pulling and building if you enjoy explosive quick-swap play: a single Totalize beat hits absurdly hard, and his kit makes capping CRIT easy. His strength is a short but heavy burst window; his weakness is a heavy reliance on Stun (best with a double-Ice-Stun setup like Lighter/Lycaon) and the need to time your swaps precisely — mistime it and you lose the buff.

What is the best team for Hugo?

Hugo works best in the Double Ice Stun team. Full members and rotation are in the Teams section.

Who voices Hugo in Zenless Zone Zero?

Hugo (faction Mockingbird, birthday Aug 20) is voiced according to the official credits published on the HoYoverse Wiki. See the full English/Japanese/Korean/Chinese voice actor list in the "Voice Actors & Character Info" block above — this data is pulled directly from the official wiki, not guessed.

Which Mindscape of Hugo is worth investing in?

Hugo has 6 Mindscape tiers (M1-M6), each unlocking its own effect detailed in the "Mindscape" block above (official wording). Mindscapes cost Mindscape Cinema currency farmed from limited banners, so weigh it against your budget — F2P players usually stop at M0-M1 and prioritize W-Engine and Drive Discs before pushing Mindscape higher.

How much Denny and how many materials to level Hugo to Lv60?

Leveling Hugo to max Lv60 (ascension + basic skills to 12 + core skill A→F) costs roughly 1,706,000 Denny, plus role-specific ascension materials, attribute-specific skill chips, high-dimensional data, and weekly boss drops — see the full list with exact quantities in the "Materials Needed" block above, sourced from the game's official leveling tables.
