Genshin Impact Ascension Materials Guide: Full List by Region, Talent Books & Weapons
The 4 character ascension material types & the real total cost
Each ascension (6 total, unlocking level caps 20→40→50→60→70→80→90) demands 4 material groups at once: (1) Mora — scaling 20,000 → 120,000 per phase, 420,000 Mora across all 6; (2) elemental gems — a 4-tier set matching the character's element; (3) local specialty — an open-world gatherable tied to the character's home nation; (4) common material — a 3-tier item dropped by regular enemies/bosses around the map. On top of that, plain leveling (not ascension itself) costs 1,672,000 Mora and roughly 8,362,650 character EXP (about 418 Hero's Wit if you used only the top-tier EXP item), for a grand total of ~2,092,000 Mora to hit level 90. These numbers are stable core-system math, not tied to any specific patch, so they won't go stale.
Elemental gems & local specialties: where to farm, respawn timing
Elemental gems come in 4 increasing rarity tiers: sliver → fragment → chunk → gemstone, with each named set tied to one element (e.g. Agnidus Agate for Pyro, Vajrada Amethyst for Electro). The main source is Elite/Field Bosses scattered around the open world — tougher bosses have better odds of dropping the higher tiers. Missing a specific tier? You can combine 3 lower-tier gems + Mora into 1 of the next tier up, or spend Dust of Azoth to convert gems from one element into another — costs extra Mora but saves you from hunting the exact right boss.
Local Specialties are gatherable plants/minerals found scattered across the open world, no combat required, and tied to a character's home nation (Mondstadt characters need Mondstadt specialties, and so on). Gathering nodes respawn roughly every 2 real-world days (48 hours), so for a character you need fast, following a known collection route beats wandering randomly. The fixed total needed across all 6 ascensions is 168 units — the same number for every character, old or new.
3-tier common materials: how enemy level & your AR change drop quality
Regular enemy groups (Slimes, Hilichurls, Fatui Agents, Treasure Hoarders...) drop their material at 3 tiers tied directly to the enemy's own level — not something you choose. Low-level enemies only drop tier 1; only higher-level ones (usually level 60+) have a chance at tier 3. Since world enemy levels scale with your Adventure Rank, simply raising your AR through quests and exploration naturally increases how often you run into higher-tier drops, no extra effort needed.
Because each enemy type always drops one fixed material line (Hilichurls → masks, Fatui → chaos devices, Treasure Hoarders → insignias...), the fastest farming approach is figuring out which line a character needs first, then clearing that specific enemy camp instead of fighting randomly across the map.
Weekday-locked talent books, weekly boss materials & Crown of Insight
Raising ONE talent (not the whole character) from Level 1 to Level 10 needs 3 Teachings + 21 Guides + 38 Philosophies, plus common material and about 1,652,500 Mora — multiply by 3 talents (Normal Attack, Elemental Skill, Elemental Burst) and fully maxing all three costs roughly 4,957,500 Mora per character. Talent books drop from Domains of Mastery on a fixed weekly rotation: each region has 2 days for one book group and 2 different days for the other, with Sunday dropping every book type. Since this schedule is core-system, not event-based, it's stable long-term — better to remember the pattern ("two alternating groups during the week, everything on Sunday") than to memorize specific dates that can be misremembered.
From talent Level 6 onward you also need weekly boss (Trounce Domain) materials — the first 3 claims each week cost only 30 Resin instead of 60 (half price), and any runs beyond that still work but at full price; the discount resets at the start of each week. The final Level 9→10 step (the "crown") additionally requires 1 Crown of Insight per talent — a scarce item that, unlike books or boss drops, can't just be farmed repeatedly on demand.
Where Crowns of Insight actually come from & weapon ascension materials
Since each character needs 3 Crowns of Insight for a full "triple crown," newer players often panic thinking they're pure random drops. In reality the stable sources are: long-term offering systems per region (one-time rewards for raising things like the Tree of Dreams, Sacred Sakura, Frostbearing Tree, Fountain of Lucine, or Tablet of Tona to certain milestone levels) — fixed, one-off rewards that don't change patch to patch; Paimon's Bargains, which sells 1 Crown per month for Masterless Starglitter; and limited-time events plus Imaginarium Theater debut rewards. Because the supply is limited, spend Crowns on your team's main DPS or core support first instead of spreading them evenly across every character.
Weapons ascend the same way characters do, but with their own material set: ore/monster scales matching the weapon type, plus Domain of Forgery materials that are locked to specific days of the week and drops from Elite/regular enemies — weapons do NOT use weekly boss materials at all (those are exclusive to character talents). Taking one 5★ weapon fully to level 90 costs roughly 907,000 Mora for leveling + 225,000 Mora for ascension = ~1,132,000 Mora total — a bit over half of what a single character costs. The smartest farming order: what F2P players should do first
Don't farm every character in parallel — Resin and talent books are both capped daily/weekly, so ordering matters: (1) Do everything that costs no Resin first (local specialties, common enemy drops) for every character in your core team, any time you're free; (2) Concentrate elemental gem domain Resin and talent books on 1-2 main carries first — spreading it evenly across all 4 team members just slows everyone down; (3) Use the 3 cheap 30-Resin weekly boss claims on your main carry first, only spend full-price runs if you have Resin to spare; (4) Supports and sub-DPS usually only need their key talent at Level 6-8 to be effective, not a full Level 10 — save Crowns of Insight for your main DPS first.
To figure out who's actually worth investing in next, check what role your team is missing on our teams page and cross-reference their current power on our character tier list — farming the right person in the right team always beats half-farming a bunch of characters at once.
