30-second summary

Aftershock is a follow-up hit that fires AFTER the original attack, generated by a specific Agent's skill, W-Engine, or passive — it is NOT a universal mechanic every Agent has. Its damage is calculated separately, does not replace or stack into the original hit's damage, and still counts toward Anomaly buildup like a normal Attribute hit. Whether a given Agent has Aftershock and what triggers it depends entirely on that Agent's own kit or W-Engine description — it cannot be generalized across the whole roster.

What Aftershock is

Aftershock is the name for a type of follow-up hit that lands right AFTER an original attack (Basic Attack, Special, EX Special, etc.) rather than being part of that original hit. It is not a skill you actively choose to use like Dodge or Assist — it's an effect baked into a specific Agent's kit, into a W-Engine's (weapon's) effect, or into a specific passive.

Because it comes from several different sources (character kit / W-Engine / passive), Aftershock is NOT a mechanic every Agent has by default — it only shows up when you use the right Agent, the right gear, or meet whatever condition that skill description specifies.

Damage is calculated separately, still counts toward Anomaly

Aftershock damage is tracked as a separate source — it does NOT stack into or replace the damage of the original hit that triggered it; numerically these are two independent instances of damage from the same action.

If the Aftershock carries an Attribute (Fire/Ice/Electric/Ether/Physical), it still fills the enemy's Anomaly Buildup gauge just like a normal Attribute hit — meaning an action with an Aftershock can contribute more Anomaly buildup than one without, which matters for Anomaly teams trying to trigger Anomalies and Disorder faster. See the full buildup mechanic in Anomaly & Disorder.

Triggers per-Agent — not a universal mechanic

Because Aftershock comes from a specific kit, a specific W-Engine, or a specific passive, there is NO single rule that applies to every Agent — what triggers it (how many hits landed, which exact skill was used, which W-Engine is equipped, etc.) has to be read directly from that particular character's or gear's skill description.

In other words: don't assume "every Agent has Aftershock" or apply one fixed Aftershock formula across the whole game. When building a specific Agent, the first step is checking that Agent's own skill/W-Engine text for any mention of a follow-up hit, and only then factoring it into your DPS math.

FAQ

Does every Agent have Aftershock?

No. Aftershock only shows up on Agents, W-Engines, or passives whose skill description explicitly mentions a follow-up hit effect — it is not a default mechanic for every character.

Does Aftershock stack into the original hit's damage?

No. Aftershock is calculated as its own independent instance of damage, separate from the original hit that triggered it — it doesn't stack into and doesn't replace the original hit's damage.

Does Aftershock help build Anomaly faster?

Yes, if that Aftershock carries an Attribute. It still fills the Anomaly Buildup gauge like a normal Attribute hit, so an action that produces an Aftershock can contribute more buildup — useful for Anomaly teams. See Anomaly & Disorder for details.
