Like most of the Morte Region, over a thousand years ago these lands belonged to the ancient civilization of Remuria, and about 450 years ago they were used by the forbidden esoteric organization, the Narzissenkreuz Ordo. Some of these places are the sunken ruins and the Orthant of Souls, one of the four points on the map of Fontaine related to the "Seal of Chymical Marriage." The "Seal of Chymical Marriage" is a magical technique of the Golden Troupe, an organization founded by the Harmost Boethius on the remains of the sunken empire of Remuria. The technique consisted of two parts: "Circle of Four Orthants" and "Tree of Emanation." According to the Golden Troupe's records, there were several important places in Fontaine needed to seal off One of the Remurian Harmosts, Aurelius, divided all phenomena into four categories: Substance, Property, Quality, and Relation. Quality was the keystone, which is what is often called the "Quadrant of Qualities": memories, wishes, soul, and persona. The Four Orthants were named in honor of the four components of Quality. About 450 years ago, all four Orthants were built by the Narzissenkreuz Ordo. Even before the founding of the order, their leader, Rene de Petrichor, discovered the records of the Golden Troupe. He learned about "Fortuna" and that kingdoms rise and fall, and when a civilization is annihilated, a new one will be born after from the ashes. This phenomenon turned out to be similar to Rene's computational scheme, called the "world-formula." After countless calculations, he found a discrepancy with Fortuna: unlike the world depicted in these ancient texts, there will be no more new civilizations born. Like the ancient Remurians, Rene wanted to escape fate and avoid the promised Apocalypse, so he founded the Narzissenkreuz Ordo. Rene was greatly influenced by the views of the Harmost Aurelius and the emphasis on Quality as the main category of all things.Ann, Caterpillar, Seymour, Traveler, and Paimon went to the Orthant of Souls one day. Ann was an Oceanid searching for the truth about her origins; Caterpillar — a former member of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo; Seymour was a mechanical sentient dog created by the great scientist, Alain Guillotin, looking for his sister and the Marechaussee Hunter, Mary-Ann Guillotin. A riddle guarded the entrance to the Orthant:"Lo, this place is the Orthant of Souls, the Shrine of Souls, the Room of Souls...""I accompany you in eternal rest"... "Born in an instant, often contradicting, always united"... "I am life's most cherished treasure"...These lines were from a centuries-old classic novel. It reads, "I was born in the fleeting moment when eyes meet. I run with my back turned to the one I pursue. Even after all flesh, bone, and entrails have been sliced away, I still lie nestled with you in the marrow that remains." The answer to the riddle was "love."In the Orthants, the Traveler and the others sought materials to create the Holy Blade of Narzissenkreuz. The Ordo was able to reproduce the four requisite hypothetical substances here in the material world, based on the esoteric philosophies of the underground kingdom and ancient Fontaine. These enigmatic substances were purely experiential, perhaps even more elusive than elemental power. And thus, four types of substance came into being: Memory, Wish, Soul, and Persona. In the Narzissenkreuz Ordo's brand of mystical philosophy, the Holy Blade was "reason," that which cuts everything open. It could only be born out of consummate human will. This knowledge of the order was also gleaned from the records of the Remurian Harmosts. They wanted to create an object endowed with meaning, the essence of which would be determined only by Quality. One of these items was a sword forged in memory of the Harmost Euergetia, and for the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, it was the Holy Blade of Narzissenkreuz. The Ordo used this sword to sever the people's will. Just like the Remurians separated their melody in order to escape the prisons of rotting flesh and gain eternal and independent life, the Narzissenkreuz Ordo wanted to get rid of the shackles of the physical body through the separation of the will.The Traveler wanted to use the Holy Blade to cut through the barrier built by Ann's creator, another Oceanid, Mary-Ann. She was a fusion of the personalities of Mary-Ann Guillotin, Seymour's mistress, and the Oceanid Lyris, a member of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo. Mary-Ann was born approximately 450 years ago when the Marechaussee Hunters engaged in battle with members of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, among whom were Caterpillar and Lyris. Mary-Ann Guillotin was injured in the explosion and was on the verge of death, but Lyris merged their consciousnesses, creating Mary-Ann. Ann and the others wanted to separate the personalities of Mary-Ann Guillotin and Lyris using the Holy Blade of Reason.Another member of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, Jakob Ingold, who remained faithful to the ideals of the order, also wanted to forge the same sword. He needed it to complete the main goal of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo in the Tower of Ipsissimus. It was he who got ahead of the Traveler and took the Soul element from the Orthant.Inside the Orthant of Souls, a mysterious looking glass is located, a portal leading to subspace inside the Book of Revelations. The world inside the book was created by Rene de Petrichor and Jakob Ingold. It was a reminder of what the world would look like after the apocalypse Rene calculated. In such a world, even sweet flowers and mint would not grow. For the first time, the Traveler and Paimon entered the world inside the book through the Book of Revelations itself, hidden inside the body of the petrified creature, Elynas. One of the Melusines tried to decipher this book, and for her, the subspace seemed like a beautiful garden. When the Traveler passed through all six mirrors, the world inside the book changed for the Melusine as well.On the north of the Eastern slope of Mont Automnequi, a sunken tombstone of Sigewinne's teacher, the head nurse of the Fortress of Meropide, is located. Many years ago, she became the only one who was ready to teach medicine to a Melusine. The children called this traveling doctor "the witch," and the witch taught Sigewinne how to make all kinds of potions and the art of using ghost stories to scare children into taking medicine. One day, Sigewienne, the Melusine she taught, became friends with a girl, but when she fell ill, her parents forbade the Melusine from coming to cure her, because they did not trust the species, which was different from them. Sometime before that, the "witch" discovered a strange illness that manifested itself in the dissolution of the human body (this "illness" was explained by the origin of the Fontainians from the Oceanids, so the water of the Primordial Sea returned them to their origin). Even after using herself as an experimental subject, she was stumped and could not find an answer on how to cure this illness, but she made a discovery: by mixing this liquid with some specific ingredients, she received a face-changing solution usable by Fontainians alone. The woman considered this discovery meaningless until Sigewinne told her about her human friend. Then the teacher realized that Melusines could also use this potion. The key component of the potion was the fluid left behind by dissolved Fontainians. Sacrificing herself, the teacher made a potion for Sigewinne and disappeared without saying goodbye. Although the Melusine did not know about her teacher's research, she accepted her parting gift and created a new appearance for herself, more similar to a human. A special investigator from the Institute, Fusilier, was sent to investigate Nacker's disappearance along with the core. Thanks to her investigation, Nacker was found and sent to the Fortress of Meropide by court order.One day in Mondstadt, the Traveler and Paimon met a Sumeru merchant, Jala, who unknowingly released Sumeru anglers into Cider Lake. Thanks to the actions of the Knights of the Favonius, all the anglers' nests were destroyed, and after paying a hefty fine, Jala was released. After the incident in Mondstadt, the woman decided to fight against the spread of invasive fish species and became the Unchained Hunter. Naive people believe that before doing something important, you should release some animals into the wild. It will bring you good fortune. Some even started buying animals just to release them. The human spirit undergoes the loss of paradise, the defeat of evil dragons, the original sin, baptism, and finally, freedom from the gods.When rumors spread in the order about the death of Narzissenkreuz, divinations of a formal member of the order, Madam M. Laveaux, showed that he was in the Tower of Ipsissimus. This did not convince some members of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, and they decided to leave the organization, losing faith in the future. When others divined their location, it turned out that all the members who had left the order were still in the tower. All of them were dissolved by the Primordial Water for the sake of the revival of Narzissenkreuz. When Fontaine was saved from the apocalypse four hundred years later, and the Fontainians were transformed into true "humans," the severed souls that had merged with Rene returned to the Ley Lines. But the souls severed before Rene awakened had nowhere to go, doomed to forever wander the waters of Fontaine as listless spirits. Recognized neither by fate nor by the Ley Lines, over the years, they began to fuse with other entities, their inner resentment lured in all sorts of evil beings, which corrupted and defiled them into nothing more than accumulations of filth. Alain Guillotin's heir, Sandrone, decided to fulfill her creator's final dream and help his best friend when Alain himself failed to do so. Eliphas became one of the members of the order, dissolved by the waters of the Primordial Sea, for the sake of a common goal.Before the sinking of the Tower of Gestalt, Melusine Nadia and Urville tried to find the treasures of the secret society, the "Liliacruces Forum." When the tower sank underwater, they ended up in the water, and Urville faced his main enemies — the ball octopuses. Thanks to the help of the Traveler, Urville was saved. It turned out that he was trying to find treasure to help cure Nadia, who was suffering from amnesia caused by a traumatic brain injury. Although the treasure turned out to be fiction, Urville decided to find other ways to make money.To the northeast of the Tower of Ipsissimus, underwater, ancient Remurian ruins that once served as baths are located. Questioning Melusine and Answering MachineOne day, the symbol of the newspaper The Steambird, Sir Arthur, was kidnapped in the Court of Fontaine. Talochard, an employee of the Marechaussee Phantom, volunteered to investigate the case. She wasn't a detective but an evidence clerk. The Melusine brought the Mek, "Curve," who could recognize lies, with her. The Traveler and Paimon, passing by, became interested in what was happening near The Steambird and joined the investigation. Together, they collected evidence and found several suspects. Although almost all the suspects turned out to be innocent, their investigation revealed a connection between the kidnapping of Sir Arthur and Curve.Thirty years ago, a researcher Dr. Mosso Lombroso, created a lie detector, the "Curve." He added some rules to the machine's core programming to ensure the accuracy of the lie detection. Those rules, named the Mosso Protocols, required Curve to answer all questions with complete accuracy and honesty, excluding the possibility of lying. The researcher's true goal was to create a machine that would gradually become human by understanding lies and humanity. If Curve would learn to lie like humans one day, it would mean that he was no longer bound by his machine programming and had acquired human emotions. Not long after the existence of Dr. Mosso's lie detector was made public, The Steambird published several articles on it and quickly drew the people's attention. The paper used special features to incite widespread fear and worry among the general public, and soon, public opinion began to turn against Lombroso. People started to worry about what would happen if a suspect in a trial isn't lying, but Curve says he is, or how to guarantee that the lie detector's output is credible. Finally, The Steambird provided evidence that exposed Dr. Mosso as having falsified results, and this evidence was key to the researcher's conviction. To save his creation, Mosso Lombroso died defending himself in a court duel.The investigation led Talochard and others to the long-abandoned laboratory of Dr. Mosso. It turned out that the researcher initiated all these incriminating articles himself. He wanted to feed the data from public opinion to the lie detector to study. He thought this lesson on dynamic evolution could surely guide his machine to another level of comprehension, and in separating truth from fiction. Curve would have eventually surpassed a machine's rules. Dr. Mosso even modified the Mosso Protocols hundreds of times. He forged the evidence and gave it to the newspaper, so he would take all the heat. Thirty years later, newspaper editor Jenck learned from the Fatui agent, who was involved in the kidnapping of Sir Arthur, that the newspaper had published false accusations that led to the scientist's death. Jenck had no regrets for the doctor but decided to take advantage of the situation and reveal the truth so that people would sue the newspaper the same way it had sued Dr. Mosso. Then the Editor-in-Chief Euphrasie, would have problems, and Jenck could take her place. People would remember him as a fearless fighter for justice who solved such a high-profile case.Jenck overheard Talochard, the Traveler, and Paimon discussing the laboratory near the editorial doors and followed them to the Morte Region along with the Fatui. Long ago, the editor made a deal with the Fatui agents, led by one of the Harbingers, that he would find Mosso's research, and in return, they would help him lead The Steambird. In the laboratory, Jenck took possession of instructions for turning on the self-destruction system and, in order to stop the Traveler, turned it on before escaping. He wanted to use the "Seal of Chymical Marriage," a magical technique left behind by the Golden Troupe, to identify several important locations in Fontaine through which his plan could be carried out.Ancient Remurians believed that complete mastery over the body by one's will was the consummation of human virtue, a pinnacle that only gods and the rarest of mortals could come close to attaining. Following moral decay, the will became shackled to bodily form, willpower withered, and humanity became entirely enslaved to their flesh. The Remurians reached heights that were challenging to attain in study and differentiation of the spirit. Spirit was divided into memory, wishes, soul, and persona. Among these, the state that came closest to the perfect freedom that divinities possessed was named "True Will." The detachment of human will with such meticulous research as a jumping-off point. Upon learning of this, Rene decided that separating a person's will could be the key to salvation from the prophecy. The rebirth ofdid not happen, and only through Jakob's efforts, a part of his personality was managed to be preserved in the Orthant. Jakob had to not only revive his friend but also hide Rene's condition and prevent the collapse of the Ordo. During numerous experiments, he managed to create an intelligent creature that even grew pseudopods, but the creature lasted only 32 days. In the end, he still managed to create a new body for Rene and implant his consciousness there. The cornerstone was a pocket watch that Alain Guillotin gave to Jakob and Rene, as it represented the time when Rene was around. After the revival, Narzissenkreuz did not remember the failure. Jakob believed that Narzissenkreuz would take long strides and walk far ahead of them once more, casting his slender shadow in the sun. He would guide all of them in shaping a new future, one in which there will be a place for everyone."...All of us Fontainians will be able to transcend in this way, shedding the limitations of physical form and separation, and prevent the apocalypse…"As the prophecy began to come true, Jakob Ingold decided to forge the Holy Blade of Narzissenkreuz and reverse the "Seal of Chymical Marriage" to release the Primordial Sea. He hoped that Narzissenkreuz, who had gone under the tower, would break the seal and take possession of the source of life. Only with the help of the Holy Blade would he be able to continue his unfinished work, gathering the wills of everyone in Fontaine, the continent, and even the entire planet unto himself. As the Primordial Sea returns once more, and asdarkens the sky, only he who is whole unto himself may survive. The will of all souls, being spared from destruction, would welcome a new dawn in the tranquil sea of innocence he would them. The Blade of Will would fall into the waters and be grasped by its legitimate owner to gain the power to combat the apocalypse. To prevent spiritual impurities and contaminants from entering the Narzissenkreuz's space, Jakob even performed the "Dispelling Ritual" in the Tower of Gestalt.After luring the Traveler into the Tower of Gestalt with the material for the Holy Blade, Jakob tried to take away the Persona element but died under the collapsed hand of the Doomsday Clock. Descending into the Primordial Sea under the tower, the Traveler, Paimon, and Ann met Narzissenkreuz, who was awaiting the beginning of the apocalypse. He believed that the Traveler wanted to prevent him from saving the world: "Why, why has this happened? Why, why did you do this? The new world cannot be born. All will die in a shell, a husk of a dream!" Narzissenkreuz realized that changes had occurred in the values originally entered into the world formula, since he did not take into account the appearance of the Traveler, the witness of all, in Teyvat. The Remurians sought to free themselves from the shackles of the flesh, and they did not care about the dulling of taste, but Modeste and Savelli realized this too late. He hid all the information and destroyed the notes and the last reserves of the treasure of Remuria to protect his friend's good name. When Monica entered the ruins, she set explosives to prevent anyone else from getting in, but she died when the ruins collapsed. Later, the news reported that the Remurian bottle had been found, an ancient relic that would have been worth millions of Mora if it had not been smashed by Monica in anger.
