Quick verdict

A no-brainer pull if you're short on good supports: she upgrades nearly every team and is a standard piece in most top teams. Her only quirk is needing ~3400 ATK to unlock her full buffs, but that's easy to reach. This is the longest-lasting investment in the game.

Stat targets

Level-60 targets (JP): ATK is priority #1 since every buff scales off Astra's own ATK — aim for ~3,429 ATK at M0 to max the Core buff (M2 lowers the threshold to 2,963). Keep enough Energy Regen to sustain her Special/Quick Assists (slot-6 Energy Regen main + 2pc Swing Jazz is standard). Substat order ATK% > CRIT DMG = CRIT Rate; CRIT is only secondary, never trade ATK for it.

Rotation & combos

1) Opener: cast her Special (no energy cost) to enter Idyllic Cadenza — Astra stays on-field, invulnerable, buffing team ATK/DMG/CRIT DMG. 2) Swap to your main carry and play normally. 3) When you want to extend a combo, swap-cancel to trigger Astra's Quick Assist (costs 25 Energy = 1 Chord): it buffs ATK and adds a hit. 4) Fire Astra's Chain Attack / Ultimate when available to refresh buffs and heal the team. Loop 2→4; she barely needs manual inputs and runs at near-zero field time.

Pros
  • Universal support that fits almost any team; whole-team buffs including one of the highest ATK buffs in the game.
  • Heals teammates, providing sustain for content where survivability matters.
  • Enables incredibly frequent Quick Assists and Chain Attacks even outside stun windows, at near-zero field time.
  • Double-DPS / double-damage teams gain even more from her than from other supports.
Cons
  • Effectively locks you into a 2-active-agent playstyle (low field time) — strong but not for everyone.
  • Low personal damage and poor at building her own Decibels/Daze — almost purely a buffer.
  • Needs ~3,429 ATK (at M0) to reach her max Core buff, so ATK must be prioritised.

Endgame mode fit

Shiyu Defense

Excellent for Shiyu Defense: whole-team buffs + healing + dense Quick Assists clear both halves fast and survive boss waves; rated T0.5 for endgame.

Deadly Assault

Also top-tier in Deadly Assault: sustain + DMG/CRIT DMG buffs push carries past tanky bosses, with double-DPS teams benefiting most; her suitability is rated 'high'.

Mindscapes — how far is worth it?

M1 12-Tone Equal Temperament Worth it

When Astra Yao's attack hits an enemy, the target's All-Attribute RES is reduced by 6%, stacking up to 3 times and lasting 30s. Repeated triggers refresh the duration. Upon entering the battlefield, Astra Yao immediately gains 1,000 Decibels. When activating her Ultimate, all squad members gain 1 stack of Song of Protection for 60s. When attacked by an enemy, consume Song of Protection, granting Invulnerability for 1s. "What is the 12-tone equal temperament?" "12-tone equal temperament is a musical tuning system, just like how children have to line up, sounds need to be in order too." "But sounds probably don't like lining up, just like children!" —Astra Yao's music teacher, recalling when she was six.

M2 Art of Greed Worth it

The ATK buff from Core Passive: "Graceful Andante" is further increased by 19%, with an increased maximum of 400. While in the Idyllic Cadenza state, when other squad members switch in through a Quick Assist, Chain Attack, Defensive Assist, or Evasive Assist, Astra Yao will additionally follow up with 1 Tremolo and 3 Tone Clusters to attack. This effect can trigger once every 3s. "The shiniest thing in the world is, of course, love!" Just like a bird gathering shiny things for its nest, an artist's inner greed is probably to gather all the love in the world. By gathering all the love, one can create the most beautiful melody.

M3 Interwoven Staff Notation Low value

Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2. A blank musical staff is a set of parallel lines that never intersect, like souls that have never met, quietly waiting for their melodies to intertwine into a song. "Let's fill it with notes! And lots and lots of tied notes. It'll make a fantastic song!" And that's how a new song was created, stretching across 136 bars, all connected with ties...

M4 Hair Upon Your Nape Situational

After activating a Chain Attack or Ultimate, within 15s, Astra Yao can trigger a Quick Assist even if she does not have Chords. When the attack hits an enemy, the interval for triggering a Quick Assist is reduced to 1s. While in the Idyllic Cadenza state, when other squad members enter the field via a Quick Assist, they will receive different buffs based on their specialty, and this effect can be triggered once every 3s for the entire squad: Attack: The next Quick Assist heavy attack on an enemy will deal extra DMG equal to 300% of Astra Yao's ATK; Anomaly: The next Quick Assist will have 50% increased Anomaly Buildup; Stun: The next Quick Assist will inflict 50% increased Daze. One hand hovers over the piano Not sure which note will bring me peace A sad minor key Or gentle melody of longing? I seek your shadow through the score I close my eyes, and see you more Such as the hair upon your nape

M5 Proxy and Silk String Low value

Basic Attack, Dodge, Assist, Special Attack, and Chain Attack Lv. +2. "Eve! I've just realized something huge — both you and Proxy(Wise/Belle) are tall and slim!" "...And your point being...?" "You're both my favorite people!" Astra beamed with joy, as if she had uncovered an earth-shattering secret.

M6 We Are the World Situational

While in the Idyllic Cadenza state, the DMG multiplier for Tremolo and Tone Clusters released or followed up with will increase to 200% of the original, and CRIT Rate is increased by 80%. When triggering a Precise Assist, Astra Yao will automatically follow up with the charged 3rd-hit of Basic Attack: "Capriccio", with a 80% increased CRIT Rate. This effect can trigger once every 10s. The turmoil in the world originates from the solitude of the human heart. If everyone's heart was reciprocated, perhaps all the suffering, sadness, and silence in the world would vanish? If we could weave this connection with song, would all the cracks heal, and all the pain turn into a beautiful melody, filling the silence? At that point, the world would no longer be a lonely island. "This song is dedicated to the world!"

Background & Lore

Astra Yao is widely regarded as Ridu's most iconic singer. With her extraordinary voice, stage presence, and songwriting talent, she has led the musical trends of an entire era. "If music is the resonance of the soul, then Astra Yao is the spark that ignites it all," said one famous music critic. As brilliant as she is, Astra remains remarkably sincere and pure. On stage, her voice resonates deeply with the audience, which has allowed her to amass a large and loyal fanbase known as her "Astranauts." Of course, Astra's brilliance wouldn't be possible without the careful protection of her manager, Evelyn. Offstage, she appears to be just a cute, hapless girl who depends on Evelyn in her daily life, and on Wise and Belle in the Hollows. "If I tickled Eous, would it make you laugh?" Astra asked curiously while lifting the Proxy, who was linked via the HDD system. She seems to have a particular fondness for Eous. Contemplation: Human emotions are indeed an interesting subject. It's still hard to determine whether Astra likes Eous because of the owner, or whether she likes the owner because of Eous. Increase Trust to Close to unlock more Astra is particularly fond of Random Play. However, her whereabouts are closely monitored. For now, it seems she can still use an excuse like, "The store offers rare versions of old movies, and I've got such good taste in movies, so of course I'd love it!" But being the biggest celebrity in Ridu, such frequent visits to a video rental store are not exactly conducive to keeping our identity under wraps. But, who cares about that! If our identity gets exposed, so be it — Astra can't not come. Contemplation: Creating various situations to bring Astra and Master together is a great way to win the Master's favor.

How to read this build page

Every Agent build page has 4 parts: a stat table by level, W-Engine/Drive Disc suggestions, a Mindscape roadmap, and recommended teams. Read them in that order — stats tell you "what you need", gear tells you "where to get it", Mindscape tells you "is it worth pulling", teams tell you "who to pair with". The section below explains how to read each part, and it applies the same way to every character on the site.

How to read the stat table and level

The stat table shows values at the ascension breakpoints (usually the final one, e.g. Lv60) — these are BASE stats with no gear added, useful for comparing Agents or checking whether you've ascended far enough. CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG are shown separately because they set the damage ceiling once Drive Disc substats stack on top. If your real stats are lower than the table, you likely haven't fully ascended or leveled yet — it's not a build mistake.

Why the W-Engine and Drive Disc picks make sense

Most Agents have a "signature" W-Engine designed for their exact role, plus a few cheaper standard-banner substitutes. Missing the signature isn't a dead end — most Agents keep most of their power with a well-matched substitute, just short by some amount of total damage.

  • Drive Disc sets (2pc + 4pc) are picked for the set effect that fits that Agent's playstyle (mono-element, Anomaly, stun, and so on).
  • Substats follow a priority that changes by role: Attack-type Agents usually chase CRIT Rate/CRIT DMG before ATK%; Anomaly-type Agents add Anomaly Proficiency to that mix; Stun/Support roles often value survivability or energy stats over pure CRIT.

These weights differ per character — follow the exact substat priority table above rather than applying one formula to every role.

Is Mindscape worth chasing

General rule: M0 (no duplicates) already clears the game's hardest content, even for S-rank Agents. Mindscape is a duplicate-fueled upgrade system, and each level costs more resources for a smaller power gain. For most Agents, the best value stop is usually M1–M2 (where some key effects unlock), while M6 is almost always for players chasing the absolute ceiling, not a requirement. Check the Mindscape section in the table above for that specific Agent's numbers.

Skill priority by role

There's no single order for every Agent, but the general pattern by role is:

  • Attack: level the main damage skill first (Basic or Special Attack depending on kit), Dash/Dodge last.
  • Stun: prioritize whichever skill builds Daze/Stun fastest, since the stun window is where the whole team dumps damage.
  • Support: prioritize buff or energy-generating skills over personal damage — this role's value comes from lifting the whole team.
  • Anomaly: prioritize the skill that stacks anomaly buildup, since most of the damage comes from the triggered effect, not the direct hit.

Always level the Core Skill steadily alongside the rest — it's a baseline stat that affects the whole rotation, not just one move.

Astra Yao FAQ

What is the best W-Engine for Astra Yao?

Astra Yao performs best with Elegant Vanity. See alternatives and required stats in the Gear section above.

Is Astra Yao worth pulling?

A no-brainer pull if you're short on good supports: she upgrades nearly every team and is a standard piece in most top teams. Her only quirk is needing ~3400 ATK to unlock her full buffs, but that's easy to reach. This is the longest-lasting investment in the game.

What is the best team for Astra Yao?

Astra Yao works best in the Fire Hypercarry team. Full members and rotation are in the Teams section.

Who voices Astra Yao in Zenless Zone Zero?

Astra Yao (faction Stars of Lyra, birthday Jan 31) is voiced according to the official credits published on the HoYoverse Wiki. See the full English/Japanese/Korean/Chinese voice actor list in the "Voice Actors & Character Info" block above — this data is pulled directly from the official wiki, not guessed.

Which Mindscape of Astra Yao is worth investing in?

Astra Yao has 6 Mindscape tiers (M1-M6), each unlocking its own effect detailed in the "Mindscape" block above (official wording). Mindscapes cost Mindscape Cinema currency farmed from limited banners, so weigh it against your budget — F2P players usually stop at M0-M1 and prioritize W-Engine and Drive Discs before pushing Mindscape higher.

How much Denny and how many materials to level Astra Yao to Lv60?

Leveling Astra Yao to max Lv60 (ascension + basic skills to 12 + core skill A→F) costs roughly 1,706,000 Denny, plus role-specific ascension materials, attribute-specific skill chips, high-dimensional data, and weekly boss drops — see the full list with exact quantities in the "Materials Needed" block above, sourced from the game's official leveling tables.
