Gameplay Basics

Cards and DeckbuildingA typical Genius Invokation deck consists of 3 Character Cards and 30 Action Cards.Character CardsPlayers may choose any Character Cards available to them for their decks. Each Character Card consists of HP, Energy, Tags, and Skills.HPThe maximum health of the Character Card. In a game, a Character Card is considered defeated if its HP reaches 0.(Note: if a Character Card's HP reaches 0 while it has an effect that ensures it "will not be defeated", the Character Card is not considered defeated. Also see will not be defeated in Keywords.)A Character Card's HP cannot go lower than 0.EnergyThe number of Energy points required to execute an Elemental Burst.(Note: some Character Cards use a different unit in place of Energy. In such cases, the unit used will take the place of Energy).TagsElement: The Element that the Character Card is classified as at the time of deck building. This tag is used to determine the validity of Elemental Resonance cards.Weapon: The type of Weapon that the Character Card uses. This tag is used to determine which Weapon cards a Character Card can equip; Character Cards with the 'Other Weapons' tag cannot equip any Weapon card within a game.Affiliation: This tag is used to determine the validity of certain Action Cards.Arkhe (Fontaine Character Cards only): Used to make certain enemies Deactivated. Currently only applicable in certain Adventure Challenges, and not in Duels.SkillsA Character Card will have:One or more Normal Attacks; One or more Elemental Skills; One Elemental Burst;Optionally, one Passive Skill.Action CardsAction Cards can be categorized into three different types:Equipment CardsCards that can be equipped onto a Character Card. Each Character Card may only equip one of each kind of Equipment Cards.Weapon: Cards that typically enhance the attack power of a Character Card, and may come with other effects. Each Character Card may only equip Weapon cards matching their own Weapon tag.Artifact: Cards that give Character Cards certain effects.Technique: Cards that allow Character Cards to use Techniques in place of Skills.Talent: Cards that enhance the base power of a Character Card. Talent cards are specific to each Character Card, and the corresponding Character Card must be in the deck for a Talent card to be valid.Support CardsCards that, when played, will stay in the Support Zone to assist in battle. These cards can have one of three tags:ItemCompanionLocationEvent CardsCards with effects that take place immediately when played. Special types of Event Cards include:Arcane Legend: Cards that may have a major effect on the state of a game. Typically, each player may only play one Arcane Legend card in a game.Food: Cards that, when played, give the specified Character Card(s) the Satiated Character Status. Food cards can't be played on Character Card(s) that are Satiated.Elemental Resonance: Special Event Cards that require at least 2 Character Cards in the deck with the specified Element to be added to the deck.Talent: Some Talent cards are Event Cards instead of Equipment Cards. The restriction on adding Talent Event Cards to a deck remains the same as with other Talent cards (the corresponding Character Card must be in the deck).Unless there are restrictions as stated on the card, Action Cards can be added freely into a deck, up to two copies per card (one copy per card for Arcane Legend cards).Acquiring CardsCharacter Cards may be acquired by winning their respective Character Invitationals and Tavern Card Challenges on the Friendly Fracas difficulty. (Diluc, Kaeya, Sucrose, and Fischl Character Cards are automatically given to you after the tutorial World Quest.)All Talent Action Cards may be acquired by winning and completing respective objectives on the respective Character Cards' Character Invitationals and Tavern Card Challenges on the Friendly Fracas difficulty. Most non-Talent Action Cards can be purchased with Lucky Coins at the Card Shop. (Quest prerequisites may apply.)Certain copies of Action Cards can only be acquired through overworld Adventure Challenges or completing tasks in the TCG Player's Manual.Certain Action Cards are not available through the Genius Invokation TCG system at all and must be acquired through another means. (Currently, the Action Card is the only card where this applies.)Notes on BalancingDue to the competitive nature of the game, cards may be adjusted at any time to maintain competitive balance. Balance changes are announced no later than when the servers are online for a new Version. It is advised that players keep balance changes in mind when building and sharing decks, as a deck might not be the same after a Version Update.Game Areas1. Character ZoneWhere Character Cards of each side are located throughout the game.2. Elemental DiceA display of your available Elemental Dice. You may only have up to 16 Elemental Dice at a time. Any extra Elemental Dice acquired beyond this limit are destroyed.3. Character SkillsSkills of the Active Character in play.On your turn, you may select one of the available Skills, and play it if you have enough Elemental Dice to pay for it.4. Summons ZoneWhere each side's Summons are located.Unless otherwise specified, no two Summons of the same name can exist at once in the Summons Zone, and attempts to create a Summon with the same name will only refresh the existing Summon of the same name to its initial state. Each side can only have up to 4 Summons in their Summons Zone. If a player's Summons Zone is full, any attempt to create a new Summon will be cancelled.5. Support ZoneWhere each side's Support Cards are located.Unlike Summons, Support Cards of the same name can co-exist within the Support Zone. Each side can only have up to 4 Support Cards in their Support Zone. If a player's Support Zone is full when they play another Support Card, they have to also destroy an existing Support Card in their Support Zone when they play it.6. Draw PileWhere Action Cards are drawn from throughout the game, when prompted. At any point within a game, you may select the Draw Pile of your side or the opponent to check the number of cards remaining in the pile.7. HandThe Action Cards that you can play. You may only have up to 10 Action Cards at a time. Any extra Action Cards acquired beyond this limit are destroyed.Game FlowPreparationAt the start of the game, each side draws 5 Action Cards from the Draw Pile into their Hand. (Arcane Legend cards are guaranteed to be drawn. If a deck has more than 5 Arcane Legend cards, they will be drawn randomly.)Players may then choose to put any number of cards (0 to 5) of their choice back into the Draw Pile and draw that many cards from the Draw Pile into their Hand (a process commonly known as a "mulligan" in card game communities). After that, both sides will secretly select their starting Active Characters, which will subsequently be revealed at the same time.Round 1 starts after this procedure.Active CharacterAt any point in the game, each side will have one and only one Character Card to be the Active Character. You may only use Skills and Techniques of your Active Character within your turn.Unless otherwise specified, all Combat Actions target the opponent's Active Character. If at any point, you do not have an Active Character, you must select another Character Card on your side to be the Active Character. If you can't do so (in other words, all your characters are defeated), you lose the game.Round FlowA Round has 3 phases: Roll Phase, Action Phase, and End Phase.Roll PhaseEach player rolls 8 Elemental Dice. They may then choose to reroll any (0 to 8) Dice once.Action PhaseBeginning with the player who ended the last Round (except on Round 1), each player takes a turn.On each player's turn, they may make as many Fast Actions as they want:Use Action Cards (except for those with the Combat Action keyword) for the Elemental Dice cost shown on the card; orConduct Elemental Tuning by exchanging an Action Card in their Hand to convert an Elemental Die into one matching their current Active Character's current Element (dice already matching that Element, including Omni Dice, can't be Tuned); orAny other action that is marked as a Fast Action. They may then take any of these actions to end their turn:Take a Combat Action by using any of the Character Card's Skills (not counting Passive Skills), a Technique, or playing an Action Card that has the Combat Action keyword, for the Elemental Dice cost shown on the Skill or card; orSwitch Character to switch another Character Card in as the Active Character (unless it is done as a Fast Action, in which case it does not end the player's turn) for a cost of 1 Elemental Die (subject to change due to effects); orEnd Round to end their turn and no longer take any turns in a Round (effectively, "ending their Round").When a player ends their turn, the other player takes their turn. If a player has already ended their Round, the other player may take as many turns as they want before ending their Round. Once both players have declared End Round, the Round moves to the End Phase.End PhaseSummons, Statuses and effects that trigger at the End Phase trigger, starting from the player who ended their Round first. (Within the Summons and Support Zones, cards are triggered by the order in which they are played in their respective Zones.)Then, each player draws 2 cards from their Draw Pile (or however many cards there are in their Draw Pile, if less than 2), then the next Round begins.Defeating a Character CardIf a Character Card is defeated:All Equipment Cards equipped on the Character Card are destroyed; All Status(es) (not including Combat Statuses) that belong to the Character do not activate, even if they are supposed to activate; If the defeated Character Card is supposed to be the Active Character of a player after the action that makes it defeated, that player may then select another Character Card on their side to be the Active Character, even if it is not that player's turn or if it is not in the Action Phase. The only exception is if the defeated Character Card is the final Character Card of that player, in which case that player loses the game, and the game ends.If a defeated Character Card later gets revived by certain effects, it will start fresh at 0 HP (plus any HP it receives at the point of revival) and 0 Energy (or equivalent), without any of the Equipment cards or Status(es) that were attached to it previously.Win/Draw ConditionsA player loses if all of their Character Cards are defeated. Typically, the other player is the winner.A draw result can happen by:Having both players' last remaining Character Cards defeated at the same time due to certain effects; orEnding Round 14 with no conclusive winner.In-game, all draw results are considered game losses to both players.Elemental ReactionsGenius Invokation TCG uses a simplified version of Genshin Impact's Elemental Reaction system, with some adjustments.Note that, unlike in Genshin Impact, in Genius Invokation TCG, with the exception of Swirl and Crystallize, all Elemental Reactions are order-agnostic; in other words, the order in which the Element Applications take place does not change the effect of the Reaction.Related EntryElemental ApplicationWhen a Character Card takes Cryo/Hydro/Pyro/Electro/Dendro DMG or Elemental Application, the corresponding Element is applied to the receiving Character Card.(As in Genshin Impact, Geo and Anemo cannot be applied to a Character Card with no existing Elemental Application.)When an Elemental Reaction happens:If it is caused by Elemental DMG, all effects of the Reaction will take place. If it is caused by a non-DMG Application, only non-DMG effects will take place.ReactionsMelt & Vaporize[Pyro + Cryo] / [Pyro + Hydro]Deal +2 DMG for this instance to the target Character Card.Overloaded[Electro + Pyro]Deal +2 DMG for this instance to the target Character Card.If the target Character Card is the Active Character, forcibly switch the next Character Card in to be the Active Character.Superconduct & Electro-Charged[Electro + Cryo] / [Electro + Hydro]Deal +1 DMG for this instance to the target Character Card, and deal 1 Piercing DMG to all other opponent's Character Cards.Frozen[Cryo + Hydro]Deal +1 DMG for this instance to the target Character Card. The target Character Card receives the Frozen status.FrozenCharacter StatusCharacter cannot use Skills.(Lasts until the end of the Round)When this Character Receives Pyro DMG or Physical DMG, removes this effect and increases DMG taken by 2.Note: Unlike in Genshin Impact:The Character Card does not retain Cryo Application upon being Frozen. The "Shatter" Reaction (as it is called in Genshin Impact) does not work with Geo Application or Geo DMG, only Physical DMG.Swirl[Anemo onto Cryo/Hydro/Pyro/Electro]Deal 1 Elemental DMG of the non-Anemo Element in the Reaction to all other opponent's Character Cards.Crystallized[Geo onto Cryo/Hydro/Pyro/Electro]Deal +1 DMG for this instance to the target Character Card.Gain 1 Crystallize point.CrystallizeTeam Combat StatusGrants 1 Shield point to your active character. Each type of game has slightly different mechanics.DuelsAll games from the invitation board in the Cat's Tail (including Character Invitationals, Co-Op Match, Arena of Champions, and Heated Battle Mode variations, excluding Automatic Artistry) as well as certain Tavern Card Challenges, Guest Challenges, and open-world challenges, are Duels. In a Duel, the opponent will play under the same conditions as you, with their own deck, Hand, Draw Pile, and Elemental Dice allocation. Special conditions may also apply depending on the mode.In Co-Op games (including Co-Op Match, Arena of Champions, and Heated Battle Mode variations excluding Automatic Artistry), a timer also applies. If a player runs out of time on their turn in the Action Phase, they immediately end their Round. If a player runs out of time on any other action (e.g. selecting a new Active Character when it's the opponent's turn), that action ends and, if applicable, a random choice is made for the player.Adventure ChallengesMost Tavern Card Challenges, Guest Challenges, and open-world challenges are Adventure Challenges. In Adventure Challenges, the opponent does not have a Hand nor Elemental Dice. Instead, they will use a set sequence of Skills each Round. You will be able to view this sequence of Skills through the use of the Intent system.

Keywords

Game ElementsShieldShield points grant your Character Card defense. Shield points are not a standalone status of any kind, but rather are part of other statuses.Unless otherwise specified, 1 Shield point negates 1 DMG (excluding Piercing DMG).EnergyJust as in Genshin Impact, most Character Cards require Energy to take out Elemental Bursts.Unless otherwise specified, these assumptions are true for all cards that require Energy for Elemental Bursts:A Character Card may only use an Elemental Burst when their Energy is at the maximum cap.Normal Attacks and Elemental Skills add 1 Energy to the Character Card that executes it.Character Cards that utilize a different system in place of Energy follow different rules.Omni ElementAn Omni Elemental Die works as any and all other Elemental Dice. As such:They can be used to fulfill any costs (Unaligned/Matching/specific Element). They can never be used for Elemental Tuning.Unaligned ElementIf an Action Card, Skill, or Technique has an Unaligned Element cost, you pay that many Elemental Dice, regardless of Element, to use it.Matching ElementIf an Action Card, Skill, or Technique has an Unaligned Element cost, you pay that many Elemental Dice of the same Element (of your choice) to use it.Special DMG TypesPhysical DMGPhysical DMG does not apply an Element to the opponent's Character Card, and thus will not cause an Elemental Reaction. However, dealing Physical DMG on a Frozen Character Card removes that Character Card's Frozen Status, with the target character taking 2 extra Physical DMG on that instance.Piercing DMGPiercing DMG can neither be amplified (by effects that increase or multiply DMG) nor be negated (by defensive or Shield effects). In other words, the number of Piercing DMG dealt to a Character Card will always decrease that Character Card's HP by that exact amount, bypassing all effects.Piercing DMG does not apply an Element to the opponent's Character Card, and thus will not cause an Elemental Reaction.Skill VariationsCharged AttackIf you have an even number of Elemental Dice at the time you use a Normal Attack, it is considered a Charged Attack.Plunging AttackIf the Character Card has just been switched into play and the first Combat Action that the Character Card takes out is a Normal Attack, it is considered a Plunging Attack.Prepare SkillA Prepare Skill does not take place immediately; instead, it waits for a certain number of turns to be executed. If a player starts a turn while a Prepare Skill is being prepared and still yet to be executed, that player skips the turn.On the turn the Prepare Skill is executed, it will be the only action that takes place that turn. The turn ends after the Prepare Skill is successfully executed. At any point before the Prepare Skill is executed, if the Character Card whose Prepare Skill belongs to gets switched out of its Active Character position, the entire Prepare Skill will be cancelled. The Prepare Skill will also be cancelled if, by the time the skill is executed, the Character Card cannot use any Skills or Techniques due to Frozen, Petrification or similar statuses.Effects that trigger on the use of a Skill will not trigger on the use of a Prepare Skill.TechniqueA Technique is a Combat Action and can be used in place of a Skill by a Character Card that has the corresponding Technique card equipped. Using an equipped Technique typically does not grant the Character Card an Energy point (or equivalent). If the Character Card cannot use any Skills due to Frozen, Petrification, or similar statuses, it also cannot use any Techniques.A Technique is not a Skill. Therefore, effects that trigger on the use of a Skill will not trigger on the use of a Technique.CountersDuration (Rounds)When a card or status has an expiration time in the form of Duration (Rounds), this value will go down by 1 at the end of a Round, and the card or status will destroy itself at the end of the Round when the value reaches 0.Usage(s)When a card or status has an expiration time in the form of Usage(s), this value will go down by 1 every time its effect is successfully triggered, and the card or status will destroy itself right after this value goes down to 0 (unless mentioned otherwise).Special KeywordsDiscardThe act of willfully destroying a certain number of cards in your Hand using certain actions.Note: Effects that count Discarded cards or trigger on a Discard only trigger when cards are destroyed by actions with a Discard keyword. Cards destroyed due to Hand overdraw, replacements of cards on the Support Zone or Summons Zone, or cards used for Elemental Tuning do not count as Discarded cards.TuneElemental Tuning. This keyword is used as a trigger when Elemental Tuning is successfully executed.SelectSelect one card from a specific number of cards. What happens after the point of selection is dictated by the action or effect that triggered the Select.Game Mechanicswill not be defeatedWhen a Character Card is defeated with an effect that ensures that the Character Card "will not be defeated", that Character Card will not be considered to be defeated, and all Statuses, cards, and Energy (or equivalent) points will remain intact on that Character Card. The Character Card's HP may be set to a certain value by the same effect.Character Status / StatusStatuses that are attached to the Character Card. They are displayed on the Character Card that they belong to.Character Statuses will be erased alongside the corresponding Character Card if that Character Card is defeated.Team Combat Status / Combat StatusStatuses that belong to the entire team; i.e. all Character Cards on the side the status is on. They are displayed under the Active Character. These statuses do not get erased when a Character Card is defeated.
