At Skyhaven flight academy, young cadet Caleb trains alongside dormmates Patrick and Gideon, while fellow cadet Timothy quietly resents his effortless talent. During a night-flight test, Caleb's aircraft is struck and stranded on a remote floating island; when rescuers finally find him gravely wounded, he explains he pushed past every safety limit simply because his desire to reach his destination outweighed his fear of dying. Despite that daring feat, Caleb's name is missing from the Deepspace Aerospace Academy's official selection list, landing him only an alternate spot requiring a second flight assessment. Disillusioned and feeling this was never truly his path, Caleb signs a transfer application and leaves the academy, to Timothy's bewilderment at graduation.
