This flashback anecdote follows a young Zayne on the snow-covered battlefield of Mt. Eternal, coldly cutting down Wanderers with almost no emotion. As a battlefield doctor, he's worn down by an endless stream of casualties, haunted by a recurring nightmare of a Grim Reaper mocking his inability to save everyone. When a Wanderer breaches the operating room, fellow doctor William saves his life and recruits him into an elite medical team. Weeks later, their 30-strong special-ops squad pushes deep into Mt. Eternal to destroy the source of the Wanderers; whittled down to less than half their number, they discover eerie black-blue crystals — and William himself becomes infected, the crystals spreading across his chest as the story ends on a haunting cliffhanger.
